The game puts you in control of many of the major characters including Harry, Hermione, Ron, Minerva, Neville, Ginny and Seamus. At nearly all times you will also have an AI partner (or several) "helping" you along.
The mechanics of the game are pretty standard for a third person cover shooter. The remote aims, B fires, Z is aim down sights, A ducks behind cover and the control pad changes your spells. Don't expect too much satisfaction from spells; they don't particularly perform as they do in the books or movies. Stupefy is your pistol, Expulso is a machine gun, Confrigo is a missile launcher and so forth. Of course as would be expected, there is no ammo, however your accuracy will get worse the more times in a row you use a spell, therefore there is a cool down period after every period of use. This provides the rare bit of strategy, especially in large fights as you constantly switch between spells to make sure each is fresh.
There is a lot of fun to be had with it for a short time though. The graphics are pretty attractive and the shooting is frenetic if rather standard. There is something rather attractive about the screen when there are several wizards fighting, with blue and red bolts flying around the screen. You will be drawn out of the game through certain bouts of silliness though, such as lamps serving as the big red barrel of the game. That's right, you cast stupefy at a lantern and watch the explosion kill several death eaters, huh? There are also too many situations where you defend your AI partner as they unlock a door. The most annoying of these is probably the fight against the waves of spiders in the Chamber of Secrets. No. Thank. You.
The game is terribly short, easily beatable in one long sitting or a couple short ones. Unfortunately, there is no real reason to return to it afterwards. While in a shooter style game an online multiplayer component would seem reasonable, it is not available here. Who wouldn't want to send Harry and Ron against Voldemort and Malfoy in an online match? Missed opportunity.
In summary, there is a lot of fun to be had for a couple of hours, but it is limited fun and will disappear in a hurry. It is probably best to wait for a bargain price.
Now let's talk about expulso. You know that in the last game (if you played it) the quick action feature wasn't really that much quicker than stupefy (just with more shots per push of B). This one is so quick it's like a magic machine gun. I found myself using Confringo and expulso and impedimenta (which i will talk about later) more than anything else. Oh, and the ever so useful protego was good too.
Another great thing that they improved on in this game was the protego shield charm! I was amazed that in this one, when you used it, you could actually walk at the same time. Something that was so useful when I was trying to escape!
Impedimenta was one of the other useful spells because you could hit multiple things with one shot. The only problem with this spell is it takes FOREVER to recharge for another shot. So use it sparingly. For giants, this is the best spell.
The game is overall a great game. It was really short tho. I would've liked more gameplay. I got it the 12th and finished it the next day. . . . But i played it on normal. I'm going to play it on advanced and expert next and after that I will post more. Thanks for reading my review!
If I could give this game a 100+ stars I would. lol. Buy it. You won't be disappointed. The cut scenes are amazing!
The game was pretty short. I'm not much of a video game person, but even I beat this game in 4 days in an hour's worth of playing time for each day. Overall, the game's a good rental. You get your 10$ worth for renting it for the week. Paying 40$ for this game would be a waste, in my opinion.
For me I'll stick to Order & Half Blood, at least it still takes more than 5 hours to complete... Just glad I didn't buy at $50 or I would have really felt cheated.
