Product Description

When you envision the perfect bowl of steamy, delicious soup, what comes to mind? Is it the soup your mother or grandmother used to make from scratch using fresh vegetables and fresh beef or chicken simmered in a savory broth with just the right mixture of herbs and garlic? Maybe your dream soup is a thick, rich bowl of New England Clam Chowder. Or maybe it's a nice can of condensed soup that you add a can of water to and Voila - you have your favorite soup. What? Scratch that last one because you won't find any of that in this book. You will, however, find the first two.

You will find 26 soup recipes with some of the classic soups like Chicken Noodle Soup, Southern Style Vegetable Soup, Cheddar Cheese and Potato Soup, Seafood Gumbo, Minestrone and many more. Some are fairly quick to make, but some take time. I do not apologize for that. If something is worth doing, it's worth doing right. Plan ahead and make the ones that take longer to prepare on the weekends. Most of these soups freeze beautifully, so it is the "cook once, serve three times" philosophy. You'll thank me for that once you get the hang of it.

You will also find 12 recipes in the salad section including salad, crouton and vinaigrette recipes and suggestions to round out your delicious soups and stews.

The recipes in this book will have the number of servings, preparation time and total time from start to finish. Your time may vary if you are just starting to learn to cook. There is also a nutritional analysis with each recipe calculated using the USDA database, Version SR-24. A nutritional analysis is very important if you have any diet restrictions or if you are trying to lose weight.

Cooking Tips and Techniques have been included to help new cooks get their bearings in the kitchen. I hope seasoned cooks can pick up a useful tidbit or two also.

I hope you enjoy I'll Have The Soup And Salad and find many useful ideas for feeding your family and friends.

About the Author

I have always loved to cook and have had the pleasure of starting many friends and family on their path to find their "inner cook". I catered for a company that produced television commercials until a job transfer moved me to another city and have written local cookbooks for years. I had not given much thought to producing cookbooks for a larger audience until Amazon came along. I now have the time to devote to the projects and it is going to be a blast.

HASH(0xa5b90bd0) out of 5 stars SO delightful! April 20 2012

Have you ever opened a cookbook and felt an instant connection to the person behind the recipes? I felt as if I had stepped into the kitchen of this I was comin over for a cup of warm soup on a rainy day. I loved the style and could feel the author's heart behind every recipe and every instruction. I think this is especially important when it comes to a soup recipe book as I have the tendency to equate it with the food that cures all - illness, cold weather and even heartache on a certain day. I can't wait to start with some of these recipes that are definitely new to me. I'll be starting with the Rustic Black Bean Chili and soon after that the Chicken and Dumplings. Yummy! I'm also excited to test out the cornbread recipe which was an exciting bonus to the book and something I adore with soup of all types. Awesome!

HASH(0xa5b90e1c) out of 5 stars Good made-from-scratch soup recipes Oct. 10 2012
By Jane V. Blanchard - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
I'll Have The Soup And Salad (Know About Cooking) by Katherine Baldwin is my first review of a cookbook. I enjoy cooking both soups and salads; I especially like recipes that are proven and easy to follow. Ms. Baldwin's made-from-scratch recipes are easy to follow and written for the novice or experienced cook. Each recipe lists the cooking times and nutritional facts and many have tips on freezing, storage, substitutes, or alternate methods.

This is not just a cookbook. Ms. Baldwin makes you feel as if you are sitting in her kitchen as she shares her recipes. She describes with humor how she developed and tested the recipe for chicken and dumplings on her father-in-law, who was a connoisseur of the soup. Other unusual soups include Salmon Stew, She Crab Soup, and Blue Cheese and Vegetable.

Among all the testy-sounding soups listed in the book, I decided to make the chicken and dumplings first. The soup was simple to cook, filled the house with a most delicious aroma, and had a down-home flavor. One guest commented that this was the best chicken and dumplings that he ever ate. I believe that it is worth purchasing this book just for this one recipe.

The salad section is scant. One recipe for basic vinaigrette salad dressing, one for homemade croutons, seven salads, and a list of popular salad ingredients. I was surprised to come to the end of the chapter so quickly.

The book cover is enticing with a colorful picture o f soup, salad and bread. I had downloaded the book to the Kindle Fire and I was disappointed to find that there were no pictures within the cookbook. Since it is so easy to add pictures to an e-book, I assume that this was a deliberate choice. Nevertheless, I was left wanting more.

In all, this book offers good recipes, humor, and cooking tips and techniques. If you cooking and would like step-by-step instructions for savory soups, I recommend this book for you.

The only book you'll ever need for soup recipes. I have tried a few so far with fantastic results. Thank you Ms. Baldwin for a wonderful recipe book. The only thing that would make it perfect would be, that it be LONGER.

HASH(0xa66a12f4) out of 5 stars lovely book with real personality April 19 2012

If you ever wanted a down to earth cookbook then this is it. I love reading cookbooks that have been written by "real" people not celebrity chefs who often lack understanding of how much time pressure us moms (and Dads) are under these days. Katherine regularly makes comments and shares stories - the one about the chef and the broccoli soup really made me smile.

I love making salads for my family - they are a great way to get vitamins and minerals but they also help to make a family budget stretch further. However, as we all know salad can get kinda boring. Not when you have this book. I got plenty of ideas from it and you will too.

The soup section is also really good.I know soups can be a very nutritious and often inexpensive meal but with a busy lifestyle the thoughts of standing at a cooker for hours making home made soup isn't that appealing. Katherine has thought of this and gives lots of tips to make the process quicker. Her freezing tips and hints on how to make things quicker and easier are well worth the price of this book.

So buy it now and add it to your recipe collection.
HASH(0xa66a15e8) out of 5 stars I WILL have these soups and salads April 22 2012

I bought this book because I have read that adding some broth or soup (healthy) and salad to my diet before a main meal, is not only nutritious, but helps manage your appetite, and as such goes some way to stop you overeating. I have been trying this theory out and IMO it does work, well for me anyway.

But I was quickly running out of soup and salad ideas, especially soups that I could freeze, because I really do not have the time to cook up a broth every day.

I was very impressed with the book. There is a great choice to choose from. But more than that, I love it when you can read and feel passion about food in a cook book. Sounds obvious but I sometimes get the feel that people just throw together recipes as part of a conveyor belt 9-5 job.

Not so with Katherine the author. She knows her soups and salads, but really wants to help you make them 'as good as it gets' if you know what I mean.

The tips section for each recipe is useful, but the tips section at the back of the book gives the book another great little extra, and there are some gems in there (well for me anyway).

Most of the recipes are within my 'skill' level, the few that look a bit more complicated I will try as the author promises that I will be well rewarded for my efforts. Great book, thank you.
