Product Description

“Shapiro is a triple threat: a psychologist who has been both a cancer patient and the spouse of a patient. He brings these perspectives to this terrifically helpful book that will assist couples as they face the challenges of serious illness. Lucid, practical, and informed by research and interviews with patients and their spouses, Shapiro provides a blueprint for managing the illness and succeeding as a couple.”—Andrew Weil, MD, author of 8 Weeks to Optimum Health and Spontaneous Happiness

"A go-to manual for any couple facing a cancer diagnosis.  Dan Shapiro provides critical tools, strategies, and compassionate reassurance to help couples manage the challenges of a cancer experience as a team, and strengthen their relationship in the process. Shapiro has experienced these issues inside and out as a medical professional, cancer survivor, and caregiver, and he delivers his hard-earned wisdom in an easy, pragmatic and humorous style."—Heidi Adams, President and CEO, Critical Mass Young Adult Cancer Alliance

Dr Shapiro has scored yet another success with his insightful and visionary look at the modern plague of cancer and its effect on couples. As always, his experience and sense of humor help weave a comforting blanket for those dealing with this frightening condition. I thought a wonderful "guidebook" for those who have to take this dark journey.. a must read for both cancer patient and significant others.

HASH(0x9bde7f20) out of 5 stars Guide for couples facing cancer Aug. 18 2013

I read this after 16 months of being a caretaker for my wife who had colorectal cancer. There are many helpful suggestions in this book, and I highly recommend reading if you as a couple are facing cancer. One of the best things about the book is Dan Shapiro's writing style, and his wonderful sense of humor. Don't miss reading this book if you are dealing with cancer. My wife and I almost have the cancer behind us now, as my wife after months of chemo and an 8 1/2 hour operation at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, AZ is now cancer free.

HASH(0x9a76b120) out of 5 stars a must read for couples facing cancer June 30 2013

This book is a God send and I wish was recommended reading as soon as people facing the possible diagnosis is made. The author touches on every aspect of going through treatment from both the side of the patient and caregiver. He touches on familt, friends, coworkers, privacy, and really everything one can think of. I wish I would have had this book from day one. One thing I also feel people need to know is that he gets people have REAL relationships going in, the good, bad and the ugly. You need not have the perfect marriage to survive this and I feel that's important to note as many books preach without that, hang it up.

Cancer is a journey that a caring couple will take together. The partner can often feel marginalized and deeply concerned, not only for their spouse, but for themselves. This book is very useful and especially we loved its emphasis upon self-care for the supportive partner. I recommend.
