What a book! I have all of Mairlyn Smith's cookbooks. This one is just as good if not better than the others because it has a great illustrative content as well as the fab recipes. Who doesn't love photos of what the food looks like? Not only is the layout fantastic, but the recipes are even better. I love it when there is minimal chopping involved and this book is exactly that. Minimal ingredients, but each one provides maximum flavor and maximum nutrient content. Not only that but you know you are getting top notch nutrition and best of all everything tastes great! My 7 yr old has not turned her nose up at anything so far and we just say "It's a Mairlyn recipe so you know you are going to love it!".

Once again Mairlyn hits a home run with her new book. A must have for everyone.....buy it for yourself and buy one for someone you care about so you can spread the good health, and great taste of these easy to make and fabulous recipes.

For anyone also wanting to know what is in their recipes, the nutrition breakdown is fantastic and has a diabetic equivalent for those needing to know that information as well.

Mairlyn has done it again. I have all of her books and they are scattered throughout kitchens in UK, Vancouver and Toronto. Everyone I have shared them with love the recipes, the ease, the taste and the funny comments. This latest book has stunning photography, in depth nutritional advice, amusing anecdotes and is an all round winner. Get rid of all the old cook books clogging your cupboard and make room for this .......you will be healthier and happier.

Every recipe I have made so far (five) from this cookbook were winners. I loved all of them and will make them again, something that is very rare for me. I am wary of "healthy" cookbooks because most of the time, they are a let-down when it comes to flavour. Boring. Not with this cookbook. Everything was tasty and flavourful. It is a cookbook I want to explore more and more.

My issue was not with the food but with the cookbook itself. Dividing it by food group and then into a seasonal subcategory made finding recipes quickly and easily impossible. As a result, you go from baking to cooking to baking... which just threw me off. Also, even though the chapters are divided into food groups there is no group for chicken or beef. Just fish. I find that totally irresponsible and a tad ridiculous. This is not a vegetarian cookbook. There were only two recipes with beef in the entire cookbook which I found in the index was under ground beef, not beef. OMG, very confusing and frustrating!

I love the introductions that Mairlyn writes for every recipe. She is such a character and I adored hearing about what she was trying to accomplish when she came up with a particular recipe. That said, her intro to the cookie recipe was four paragraphs long! Too much text. In a lot of the recipes we are told to wash our hands over and over again which fills the directions up with lots of text. For the stir fry recipe, for example, if the list of ingredients had told us how the vegetables and meat were to be prepared, there would have been less text in the directions making it easier for me to make the dinner and the recipe appear less daunting.

This cookbook needed a really good edit.

"Healthy Starts Here" epitomizes the motto of "Eating Well," my favourite food magazine: "where good taste meets good health." Author Marilyn Smith uses comedic flair, a degree in home economics, a teaching certificate and her vast knowledge of nutrition to explain the health benefits of a wide range of foods. Then, she persuades readers to eat these foods by providing 140 delectable recipes. For example, in the chapter "Grains: Three Pluses in One Tiny Package," she offers a New Orleans-inspired jambalaya with brown rice. In "Berries: Antioxidants to the Rescue," she incorporates nutrient-rich fruits into dishes such as blueberry quinoa salad. The book also provides shopping and food-storage tips, nutritional information and diabetic food choice values for each recipe, and a guide to retraining sodium-addicted taste buds (only three of her recipes call for salt). More information is available on her website: (...)

I really do LOVE this lady, I first started watching her on City Line, she is not only VERY knowledgable, but extremely funny too !
She translates into laymens terms how and what to look for in healthy choices...
My ONLY problem with the book, there is just not enough pictures for me,
and unfortunately I need visuals to help me decide if I want to make something or not, but I really is a beautiful book.

This is the only cookbook that I really need. The recipes are simple yet have complex flavours and it's a bonus that they are also healthy. I use this as my 'go to' book for casual entertaining and everyday meals. The breakfast grab and goes have become a staple in my home and everyone grabs one out of the freezer on their way out the door in the mornings. The tip about marinating chicken and then freezing it was invaluable as I now always have something ready to prepare.
THANK YOU, Mairlyn Smith for writing recipes that are healthy and don't taste like %!*?.
