Product Description

Review

"Heather has two mommies—and a new look! Newman's picture book about Heather and her mommies first appeared 25 years ago as the product of desktop publishing and a determination to create a story reflecting family diversity. This updated version includes new illustrations by the commercially successful Cornell, which supply humor and avoid lesbian stereotypes that dogged earlier versions. . . . Welcome back to Heather and her mommies."
—Kirkus Reviews

The author’s text is simple yet powerful in its ability to move readers of all ages. Cornell’s fluid watercolor and gouache illustrations breathe life into this delightful story. Each page is artfully and distinctly rendered to be a visual depiction of the beauty and joy of diversity.... Readers will be warmed by this glimpse into Heather’s family, whether revisiting the text or experiencing it for the first time.
—School Library Journal

The details are different, but the nontraditional-ness is held in common.
—The Horn Book

Though a quarter of a century has passed, the book holds up well. With new illustrations and a slightly revised text, it remains a charming, sweet-spirited story that still fills a need...Newman and her new illustrator Cornell deserve kudos for bringing fresh life to this standard title.

HASH(0xa2071768) out of 5 stars Great new edition resolves many issues March 30 2015
By BookMom - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This new edition (2015, with illustrations by Laura Cornell) is a big improvement. It's much more attractive--with zippy color illustrations--and the content is more focused. Eliminating the details about how her moms met and got artificially inseminated, this new edition simply makes the point that families come in all shapes and varieties--the important thing is love. Since the story offers examples of her classmates' families, it could actually be useful for lots of different family configurations. The original was ground-breaking, and served an important purpose, but as a librarian, I'm so happy to have this terrific new version to share with our patrons.

We need more gay and lesbian children's books. I think it helps our kids not feel so much like the minority when in school so this book was perfect for our little guy! Well written and great illustrations. Our son just loves it and wants to read it almost every night!!

Ordered this for my 3 yr old because I want him to understand that love is what makes a family not gender or orientation. I love the theme and the story. Great book for all kids, not just those with gay/lesbian parents(s)it is never too early to teach love and acceptance!!!! The story is a nice way to open up dialogue about broader issues of human rights, freedom and equality for all citizens, and having respect for other peoples lifestyles :)

HASH(0xa225d498) out of 5 stars A story that shows that families come in all sizes, shapes, colors, and genders Aug. 28 2015
By Dad of Divas - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
"The most important thing about a family is that all the people in it love each other."

This is a quote directly from this must read book. To say that it is the theme is accurate. So is the fact that the author does an excellent job in showing through her text and the excellent illustrations by Laura Cornell, that families come in all sizes, shapes, colors, and genders.

Our families today are divergent. We have a mother and father, single parents, grandparents raising their grandchildren, and two mommies or two daddies. Of course we also have children in foster care to consider. I believe the teacher in the story does such a great job helping all the children to see how important their families are. In the story you will see how each child's family is different too.

I was surprised to find out this story was written 25 years ago. It is wonderful and it is still available. I so hope parents and teachers will buy a copy to read to their children.
