Maddie loves working at the Checkerberry Inn, where she's the chef. Maddie's boss wants to find Maddie a date for the gala they're hosting, but Maddie gets out of it by telling her she has already found someone. When Maddie needs an extra pair of hands in the kitchen one night Cole helps her to manage. In return she does him a favor and he promises to coach her, so she can get a date with the man she's admired from afar for a while. Will the guy Maddie's planning to take agree to accompany her?

Cole needs a second chance. He's moved in with his grandfather and finally has a chance to make his dreams for the future come true. Working for Maddie is fun, but assisting her to score a date for the gala isn't easy. Cole likes Maddie and would love to date her himself. However, Cole's past isn't something he wants to bother Maddie with. Will he ever be free of it and will he eventually get the chance to find happiness?

Cole is a sweet guy. He has a wonderful kind heart and he's incredibly gentle. Maddie is feisty and caring and she makes Cole come out of his shell. They're both adorable and I loved their beautiful personalities. Cole and Maddie are talented and hardworking, but they aren't as successful in life as they could have been, because they've each been damaged by someone in their pasts. They are insecure because of it, but together they're great and I immediately loved their connection. I like stories about true love and Her Unexpected Hero is definitely a good one.

Kyra Jacobs has a fabulous descriptive writing style. I love her smooth and interesting dialogue and her main characters are very special. Her Unexpected Hero is sweet and romantic. Because of the unfairness of what's been done to Cole and Maddie there's a nice layer of depth as well, which gives the story a good balance. Her Unexpected Hero is both charming and entertaining. I loved the endearing ending and really enjoyed reading this heartwarming book.

Her Unexpected Hero is a light-hearted, clean, small town romance but still has heat between this spitfire chef and her sexy new recruit looking for a fresh start. There is a little bit of drama that keeps things intriguing from start to finish, making this an easy read that can be read in a couple of hours. While this is part of a series it can be read as a standalone (I’ve only read one of the two previous books).

Maddie and Cole, who tell the book through dual perspective, are two sort of misfits with a connection that neither one can ignore as they grow closer. You can’t help but hope these two very likeable and sweet characters, who both have realistic emotions and flaws, will get a HEA because, despite their differences, these two are perfect for each other. The steady development of the relationship allows the reader to clearly see how their relationship is changing.

If you are looking for a fairly light, fast paced, well written, small town romance, definitely give this a try. I liked it.

5.0 out of 5 stars a clean, sweet book that is easy to get sucked in to from the start July 17 2017
By Heather - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
This book takes place in the Checkerberry Inn series but you do not have to have read the previous books to enjoy this one. There is minimal cursing (no f-bombs) and the heat level is sweet, without any on-screen sex. If those two things turn you off, you do not have to worry about them with this book.

This was my first Kyra Jacobs book and I enjoyed it so much that I have put the Checkerberry Inn series on my to be read list. I thought that Cole's backstory was really great; it was interesting and realistic without being over the top. I loved his grandfather and the connection they had. I thought that Maddie was incredibly relatable (sometimes heartbreakingly so) and was the kind of character that I would be friends with if I ran into her outside of her kitchen. It was so easy to root for these two to find their happily ever after. I also enjoy the little suspense theme that was weaved in to this one. I thought that it was perfectly done, being just enough to add to the story without overwhelming it or taking away from the main plot.

If you like a clean, sweet book that is easy to get sucked in to from the start, you will love this book. I would highly recommend this one to anyone who enjoys a sweet romance between two unlikely but perfectly matched people.

I requested and was granted an ARC of this book via the publisher and NetGalley. I was under no obligation to write this review, I did so because the book was fabulous.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and Swoony! July 17 2017
By J. Cross - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Perfect summer read! Maddie seems to have everything in control in her domain as the sassy and in-charge chef at Checkerberry Inn. That is, until swoon-worthy Cole Granville steps into her kitchen. In desperate need of a second hand, she begs him to help her out, but soon regrets it. She's unaccustomed to the electric tension and distraction of the handsome man with the Texan drawl currently eating up her workspace AND her headspace. Cole tries, and fails, to keep his eyes off his curvy boss. He doesn't want to ruin this second job as he needs the extra cash to chase his dream and escape his haunted past.

Funny, adorable, sweet, and swoony. Jacobs tells a wonderful, heart-warming story. Though this is book 3 in the Checkerberry Inn series, it's easily read as a stand-alone.

Recommended to all lovers of small-town romances with a kick of sass and a handsome, southern gentleman.
4.0 out of 5 stars What are Cole and Maddie cooking up? July 24 2017
By Kindle Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
**3.5 Stars**

Maddie, a chef at the Checkerberry Inn, is naturally an introverted person. Her boss, Ruby, fancies herself a matchmaker and decides it's her responsibility to find someone for Maddie, or at least a plus one for the upcoming charity event. Though Maddie doesn't care about the dance, she does wish she could get "Cute Guy," aka the attractive man she may have switched her laundry days to coincide with, to notice her. Maddie, desperate to avoid Ruby's attempt to set her up with someone old enough to be her father, quickly invents a date for the event. However, that becomes something for a later time when Maddie is forced to fire her kitchen helper, Sarah, just hours prior to Ruby's bridge gathering. Desperate times and all that...

Cole returned to town a few months ago and has been helping his grandpa at the family's hardware store. But he's also been looking for extra work as well as he's hoping to open his own business offering guitar lessons and repairs. When the beautiful Maddie, yeah, he's noticed her, asks if he's available for some work, he quickly accepts. Accomplishing his dream may be closer than he thought.

Though Maddie knows guys as good-looking as Cole aren't interested in women like her, she can admit, at least to herself, that he impacts her ability to be coherent now that they're in such close proximity. Cole is trying to stay focused on his new job, hoping it becomes permanent as he saves money to purchase a shop, but the sexy Maddie makes it difficult at times. Add in that she can obviously cook, and she's funny, and he knows he's in trouble where she's concerned.

When Cole and Maddie begin negotiating his wage, Maddie decides to see if Cole can help her with another issue, seeing as how he's asking for more than the usual pay. Who better to ask about what she can do to capture Cute Guy's attention than another cute guy?

As Cole and Maddie begin working together inside the kitchen and out of it, the two quickly build a friendship that slowly becomes more as they get to know one another better. Maddie is finding more confidence in herself, becoming secure in the knowledge that she's worth it, thanks to Cole. As for Cole, he's second guessing his decision to help Maddie because he wants to be the guy she's doing all this for, but he doesn't know how to change their relationship to a more intimate one, nor is she even wants to. Plus, there's secrets he's keeping in regards to the life he left behind, and it's hard to look toward, and become invested in, a future when you're worried about your past.

Will Cole and Maddie realize they're connection is more than just that of friends? Will Maddie let go of her "Cute Guy" fairy tale and admit Cole is her dream come true? Will Maddie's plan to thwart Ruby's matchmaking attempts work? Will she discover real love because of it? What happened to Cole before he came home? Will he tell Maddie the truth? How will she react upon finding out? Is there a HEA for these two?

One-click now and follow along as a plan to help Maddie catch one man's attention puts her in the path of the one meant to be hers.

3.0 out of 5 stars clean romance July 17 2017
By Book Lover - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Maddie Frye is the Checkerberry Inn’s fiery chef. She is very hard working, snarky, funny, a perfectionist, introverted and independent. She is short and curvy. Maddie was raised by her grandmother who gave her her love of cooking. Maddie took a huge psychological/emotional hit from an ex-boyfriend and has shielded herself from relationships since.

Cole Granville has not had an easy life. He was raised by a mother who cared more about her addictions than him. As a consequence of this, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and served jail time. His only saving grace has been his grandfather. Once he got out of jail and finished his probation, his grandfather insisted he come live with him to get a fresh start and plant roots. Cole’s dream is to open a music store, give lessons, do repairs, etc. He’s willing to work whatever jobs he can get to save up the money he needs.

Maddie knows Cole’s living with and working for his grandfather as well as and looking for side jobs to earn extra cash. When her kitchen assistant bales on her, and she sees Cole making a delivery at the Inn, she runs out and offers him the job.

Cole works for his grandfather during the day and Maddie at night. These two strike up a friendship and Maddie confides she needs dating advice/help. She’s sort of met a guy she’d like to get to know better and isn’t sure how to go about it. The more time they spend together, the more Maddie realizes she’s more interested in Cole than cute guy. Cole is interested too but doesn’t think Maddie would ever be interested in him once she knows his background.

I didn’t really feel the chemistry between these two. I definitely felt a very comfortable friendship. So much going on in their heads. It needed more action less thoughts. In addition, we repeatedly get subjected to both their insecurities.

This is a clean romance. No sex scenes. We are led to that then sent to the morning after.

This isn’t a bad read, it just needs more main character and romance development with a faster pace.
