HASH(0xa58e839c) out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful book! Anyone interested in folklore or Albania in general should consider this a must buy Jan. 14 2008

I've had the pleasure to read this book in the Albanian original as a child in grade school. Over the years my appreciation for the beauty of the language with which it is written has grown immensely. It is nothing less than a treasure, and I hope that many English readers will find it as enjoyable and enriching as I have. There are not many excellent Albanian translations out there, but this is definitely great. Without a doubt, Robert Elsie has done a wonderful job translating this challenging piece of Albanian literature. For that alone, he deserves a lot of praise.

If any of you readers are interested in folklore or Albania in general, I recommend this most enthusiastically. It is an immersion into a culture little understood and little known even beyond the frontiers of South-East Europe. A culture and tradition nurtured in the face of a constant struggle for survival...And for those more academically inclined, this book is a taste of Balkan nationalism- as heroic as it is tragic. I hope many more will enjoy it...It is a definite must have!
