Product Description

Product Description

The History of Joseph Smith by His Mother is a biography of the Latter Day Saint prophet Joseph Smith, according to his mother, Lucy Mack Smith. It was originally titled Biographical Sketches of Joseph Smith, the Prophet, and His Progenitors for Many Generations and was published by Orson Pratt in Liverpool in 1853.

Shortly following the death of Joseph Smith in 1844, and into 1845, Lucy Mack Smith dictated her recollections and family story to Nauvoo schoolteacher Martha Jane Coray. Coray worked with her husband to compile these books of notes and other sources into a manuscript, which was then copied.

About the Author

HASH(0xa6756ac8) out of 5 stars Who Was Joseph Smith? Oct. 25 2010
By Anne Wingate - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
I can't believe this has gone unreviewed. I don't know whether Lucy Mack Smith wrote the book herself or whether it was an as-told-to, but I do know that it's a realistic woman's look at her son, who became a major prophet. Since most people who are not LDS do not believe that prophets are still on the earth, I think it would be a real eye-opener to those people. To Mormons, it is a warm and cozy look at a man they love and revere. One important point is that Mormons DO NOT worship Joseph Smith. We worship God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost. But Joseph Smith, despite many difficulties leading up to martyrdom, is considered the most important prophet the world has ever produced. If you believe our teachings, read this book. If you don't believe our teachings, read this book, and our faith will make more sense to you, even if you still don't believe our teachings.

When you want to know about someone, ask someone who knows them well and very personally! This is a very interesting story of the life of Joseph Smith, as witnessed firsthand by his Mother. It gives very personal and touching accounts of the man, and the trials he suffered as he worked to establish The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is straightforward and plain in the explanations of his persecutions, and makes one realize that religious piety was not the foremost reason that drove his persecutors, but jealousy and greed. The Latter-day Saints of that time were industrious and successful at building beautiful communities in the wilderness, and others were anxious to drive them out and steal their homes and lands. This was never stated in the book, but was evident as I read the stories of what happened to Joseph Smith and his family and those who espoused his beliefs.

This was a fascinating read on the roller-coaster ride of the life of Joseph. I thoroughly enjoyed the account from the eyes of his mother. Talk about religious intolerance! Why was/is he so hated and discriminated against? He never seemed to have done anything to other people, but he certainly awoke in them their true selves. Why did so many people antagonize him if they didn't believe him?

HASH(0xa642bcfc) out of 5 stars A Mother's Testimony of the Restoration March 24 2013
By Jani - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
An account of the restoration of the gospel told through the loving eyes of a parent declaring to the world the truth of our Father's love for His children. A touching and insightful narrative of the many trials and blessings of the early church in this last dispensation. The reader will come away with not only a greater appreciation of the trials of the early saints, but a greater testimony of the restoration of all things by the prophet Joseph Smith. This story, told through the eyes of a beloved mother will give rise to love for all those who sacrificed for this gospel, especially the Smith family.
