As far as the actual film, I feel it equals the LotR trilogy. Very well made, great acting throughout, lots of action, and flows well. As was the case with the original trilogy, the movies deviate from the book in many (and sometimes major) ways, but all in all, it conveys the story well.
So if you don't really care to have the complete editions, and want to save some money and enjoy all 3 Hobbit movies, then by all means buy this set. But if you are a completionist, and/or want the extended editions you are best to just wait a little longer.
