GEORGE ORWELL was born in 1903 in India. He served with the Imperial Police in Burma and worked various jobs before joining the Republican Army in the Spanish Civil War. Orwell was the author of six novels (including Animal Farm and 1984) as well as numerous essays and nonfiction works. He died in 1950.

This book clearly shows why Orwell wrote Animal Farm and even 1984. The communists took over the leftist government . They killed their opposition . The innocent and naive Orwell who felt that he had seen the socialist ideal in real life soon learnt that it was temporary. He was almost surprised. He still wanted this side to win to beat the real enemy the fascists. He learnt that the communists were so totalitarian where they even controlled the press. Even English papers were totally distorting what was happening in Spain. It sounds like 1984. He found it difficult to publish his book even in England. As in 1984 , the regime changed allowed no freedom of expression. Now the anarchists were fascists paid by Hitler. Therefore had to be eliminated. This experience marked his life. An excellent work....

Didnt finish it. i kind of wanted a book on the theory of anarchism. this book is a memoir of fighting in the trenches. and orwell is clear that it was hopelessly disorganised. all the fascists lined up behind franco, but the leftists were scattered. a lot like today. conservatives love their demagogues. well, it works out for them.

just writing this, i realize, yeah, maybe for the left to win we have to stop competing. commit to total decentralisation. hmm?

Maybe his best book, but its so hard to say. He never wrote a lot of books, but those he did were great and this is one of the greatest. Shows the futility and disorganization of the government forces opposing the much better equipped and disciplined army of Franco's fascists. An excellent book. Get past 1984 and animal farm, those were no even close to his best writing.

Orwell enlists himself into the Spanish Civil War. Orwell is a committed socialist and wants to fight against fascism. General Franco is backed by Nazi Germany. The left leaning Republican government, gets help from Mexico and the USSR.

Orwell ends up fighting in a trench warfare situation. The Spanish supplies and equipment are very poor and outdated. He details all the personal aspects of living and fighting in the mud. Orwell even receives a bullet wound through his throat. The reader ends up with a full understanding of a soldier`s day to day life.

Now here is the unique insight into the world of warfare. Orwell also explains all the political struggles that transpired during the Spanish Civil War. The Appendix documents all the various political factions, that are fighting the war. Most accounts of warfare either outline the big picture, or list the daily grind from a soldier`s mindset. Orwell delivers both perspectives of warfare.

This was a book that is used as an inspiration for a lot of mil sci fi, and I'm glad I took the time to read it. In this memoir, you can see a lot of the memes observable in the rise of any socialist state, and especially how they rot from the inside out. More importantly, there are at least a couple characters in this book that I believe provide the inspiration for a few characters in Animal Farm.

I recommend this as a summer read.
