Once the item arrived at home we were gladly surprised with the quality of the product.
Strongly recommend the item!
The individual cheese trays melted slices of raclette slowly but thoroughly and browned the tops. Another reviewer mentioned that it was slow. Well, that's sort of the point with raclette. This is a French/Swiss tradition, and this tradition is about spending time talking, laughing, and sharing while the cheese melts. I suggest that if you want quickly melted cheese, use the µ-wave. In our case, a pound of raclette divided amongst four eaters using two trays each was melted in about an hour.
The trays are coated with nonstick and there was absolutely no problem with cheese sticking.
On the large main tray we warmed slices of German ham, German sausages, Summer sausage, prosciutto, pearl onions, and new potatoes. We noted that if we left some of the items on for longer than 4-6 minutes they started to sizzle and brown.
For dessert we used the set for choco fondue. I melted bittersweet chocolate on the stove. It was a bit thick, and I didn't want to burn it in the incredibly hot fondue pot, so I first poured into the fondue pot some cold cream. It boiled instantly. This set is powerful. After the cream cooled the pot a bit, I poured in the fondue and we enjoyed silky smooth hot chocolate. We did turn off the coils about halfway through dessert because I thought it might start to burn the chocolate. A rheostat would be a nice addition for the fondue coil.
Cleanup was simple. The non-stick coating does exactly what it describes. Bonus: there was very little new electrical appliance smell. Just be sure to use a heavy duty extension cord for this. The attached cord is short and we used it in the middle of the dining table. We had a 6-foot thick extension cord and it got fairly warm.
My family have found a new tradition. At less than forty dollars (a pricing mistake, I think), this set provides great value and fun for the money.
