It was difficult at first, to relate to superficial Katie O'Connor, with her shallow obsession in needing to marry a man for money. I could understand why Luke McGee, lawyer at the Children's Aid Society, is always at odds with her, when they're forced to work with each other there. But they also have a longstanding feud from their childhood. It was occasionally brought up in the previous O'Connor series, Daughters of Boston, and it was funny how they antagonized each other to no end. That only continues in this book. But then Katie sees how Luke relentlessly champions the plight of the poor and needy orphans, and her opinion of him starts to change. In fact, she has an aha moment, where she realizes she actually likes him quite a lot. Wait a minute! Could she possibly be falling in love, with Luke? She goes through a metamorphosis of sorts, where she begins to look beyond herself, and becomes more aware of other people's needs. And Katie looks quite attractive to Luke when she loses the selfishness. But Luke is by no means perfect either. He can be quite exasperating at times with having to do everything his way. While he has good intentions, especially when it applies to the dilemma of his good friend Betty, his decision-making left much to be desired. I just wished Luke and Katie would realize they were meant for each other, already!

Where does one begin to describe the amazing talent of Julie Lessman? Whether you're looking at the character development, or the intricate details of setting, you can be sure that Julie Lessman never fails to impress!

I've never been to Boston, or lived in the 1920's, but Julie makes me feel like I've been transported back in time; like I've walked right into the pages of the book. I can see the family gathered around the table, I can hear the crackle of the fire, I can feel the pain of a dear friend who has suffered a terrible loss, I can smell the sweetness of a beloved father's pipe, and I can almost taste the sweet tartness of a tall glass of lemonade. Julie's writing skills are spot on, and always leave me wanting to read more and more!

Even though the story takes place in the late 1920's, you can see how this story could take place now, in present-day America. The trials that people faced then are very similar to those that many of us face now. And even though the O'Connor family is fictitious, we can come away from the story knowing that we've been shown an example of how we're to follow God's precepts in all of our circumstances. Through the lives of the characters, we can be entertained, while at the same time nurture our soul with reminders of God's love and the undaunted hope that we can only find in a relationship with Him.

If you love a satisfying, well written story, filled with love, passion, excitement, twists, turns, and surprises . . . look no further! A Hope Undaunted is just what you're looking for. I highly recommend this book without any reservations! Just be sure to read Julie's Daughters of Boston series first before you dive into the Winds of Change series. You'll be so glad that you did!

This is the first book that I have read by Julie Lessman and I would definitely choose to read another one. A Hope Undaunted is a story about pain and hope and freedom. Made up of several sub-plots, Julie has cleverly woven them into a single main story, dependent on each of the sub-stories. The many characters in the novel set the stage for the larger story, and the reader must take great care in keeping them all straight.

From opening the first page Julie has the attention of the reader. It is impossible to realize the depths to which the intricacies of the various characters' lives will intersect. It's fabulous the way she has melded it all together.

"Katydid" has her life perfectly planned out. She's got a career path with a focus to empower women; she loves a man who would turn the world for her if he could. She's smart, pretty, ready to take on the world, and nothing is going to stop her - certainly not Cluny McGee, the puny brat from her childhood who betrayed and hurt her deeply. But they meet again and thus begins the whirlwind of confusion, love, hate, anger - everything that will threaten her perfectly planned life. Her father's iron will rules when Katie is caught out after curfew with her "Jack". The imposed punishment is volunteering for the entire summer for an association in Boston which works with the orphans on the street in an attempt to find good homes for them. AND she can no longer see Jack! As luck would have it, McGee has just taken a job at this same organization and he is determined to put Katie in her place. But Katie has the will of a stubborn mule and she is not ever going to let a man lord it over her.

Who will win? Read the book for yourself and find out!
