HASH(0xa24e25ac) out of 5 stars Unimpressed Sept. 19 2014
By L. Christensen - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I think the actual story had potential but the ending was awful. It ended too soon with no hint of future stories about the family. After checking subsequent books by the author, I discovered the Ballou family story continues with several more books. It would have been nice knowing you had to continue the series to find out what happens to them.

The characters seemed very real and well thought out. There were too many grammar and spelling errors that took from the story. I found it very strange that the title of the book is singular and the page headings are plural.

I got this in the western section but can't see how by any stretch of the imagination it would be considered a western. Unless the mention of the family moving to Indian Territory in Oklahoma counts, the entire story took place in the south.

HASH(0xa24e2600) out of 5 stars It must be me.... Jan. 8 2015

it must be me but I thought this book was written for the youth reader. It was so simplistic with 12 year old vocabulary and full of clichés regarding the old south. Am always mystified by so many 5 star reviews on Amazon for things mediocre to me.

HASH(0xa24e28dc) out of 5 stars A foreign language Aug. 15 2014

There were so many misspelled words I thought I was reading a foreign book. It was a good book and you will enjoy it as I did if you get by all the mistakes.

HASH(0xa24e27d4) out of 5 stars Good book March 22 2015
By J. Anderson - Published on Amazon.com

First book of this author that I have read. Overall I liked the book enough that I will read the next books in the series. The 4 star rating is due to quite a few misspelled words. I don't mean words that could be considered for the way they talked in the time period of the civil war. These were simple words like " I'd " (mispelled as W'd)

HASH(0xa24e29c0) out of 5 stars Pronouns are not interchangeable April 17 2015
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com

Stallions are male ("he") and mares are female ("she") - "it" should be reserved for when gender isn't known. Aside from the incorrect and inconsistent pronoun use (and other typographical/grammar/spelling errors), this novel contained too many story starts with no resolution to any. I was excited to discover a new series but won't be following this family any further.
