About the Author

CLAUDIA DEY is a novelist (Stunt), playwright (Trout Stanley) and columnist (The Globe and Mail’s Group Therapy and Coupling). She also wrote the sex column for Toro magazine. She then decided the column was not enough. Prospective pilots needed a book—field guide, in fact. So here it is. Visit Claudia Dey online at Aa href="">" or on Twitter @claudiadey.

How To Be A Bush Pilot does not read like a standard manual. It's more like a coming-of-age novel. Bush Pilot, a dude who's an okay, earthbound lover, goes on a quest of discovery with a wry instructor, Commander Mistress, and (spoiler alert) gains his wings. (Of course, as the he learns new techniques, so do we, as readers)

Dey's writing is beautiful. The exchanges between the Bush Pilot and Commander Mistress are so sharp that you'll almost certainly find yourself sharing them with your real life partner ('Just what's so funny over on that side of the bed?') Dey's raunchy yet incisive humour sets the right tone for candid chats about topics that are often awkward to broach ('Are you interested in having a ...'?).

When I finished How To Be A Bush Pilot, I felt like sending Claudia Dey a 'thank you' note. If you want a sexual tune-up (and, let's face it, who doesn't?), I can't recommend this book highly enough.

This "real-good-sex in the real-world" text is a quality read with some helpful insights for men, but I found the style of humour to be too patronizing and ultimately immature to upgrade this book from worthwhile library-loaner, to must-have on the male bookshelf. It would be a real pleasure (pun intended? :)) to read a real-world sex guide from a straight / bi female author that was presented in an entirely well-balanced, respectful tone. The side aliases of "Bush Pilot" and "Mr. Goodscrew" are silly, unnecessary, and dampen some of the excellent homework Ms. Dey has completed. In terms of content, this book provides excellent coverage for the physical side of sex and how to increase male stamina in a realistic way. However, the sections on seduction and group sex were disappointing, thin, and lacking real insight. This is where the real opportunity to present useful, fresh information for the audience lies, IMHO. Similar to the "players' guides" written by straight men but with a fresh female perspective, where are the chapters on how to meet random women in the real world in a club or restaurant and consistently create a sexually charged atmosphere within the interaction (e.g. going from "0 to 60 mph, and then the finishing stretch")? How about some useful, practical, detailed advice that actually works on how to "hunt" with your GF or spouse for a fit, attractive female "third-party" for the menage a trois experience? It's the detail behind "how to hunt in the real world in the way women want, yet get the results you seek" type of info that female authors like Dey need to bring to the table in order to truly engage the straight male reader. This would be real innovation in sex authorship, IMHO.

I gave this as a gift to two different female friends. Every time I see them they mention something about how funny and brilliant this book is.

HASH(0xa463b180) out of 5 stars Too long, too little pay off Dec 2 2012

Format: Hardcover
This is a 50 page book jammed into 700+ pages. Her language takes so tediously long to get to the point that I was left wondering if she was paid by the word? I pressed on, read the whole book and was left with a sense that most of the book could be summoned up in one sentence "ask her what she wants" instead of giving up hours of your life reading this book.

She tries too hard to be cute and hip with her vocabulary, as if she was your buddy giving you advice, but with advice, one usually has a point. Not really so with this book, the language just wanders aimlessly.

This excellent and witty book explains human, sensual interactions in a very entertaining, creative and user-friendly manner. The author's impressive research and data combine to make this a compelling read, over and over again. It's written tongue-in-cheek, making it accessible and effectively dismissing awkwardness about the topic. Although it is obviously written for men, I really enjoyed it. I'm a middle aged woman and I thought I knew all about myself, but every page of this book enlightens me more. I've bought a dozen copies and have let friends borrow far, nobody has returned them to me...not even my hairdresser! Believe me, anyone who is living, breathing and enjoying a sensual relationship that involves a woman can learn a whole lot from the delightful Ms. Dey. I think of "How To Be A Bush Pilot" as my personal owner's manual!

A bit long winded, but a fair read. You will learn a few things.
