HASH(0x9b86da68) out of 5 stars The best beekeeping book there is! Dec 24 2012
By Patrick Freivald - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
A practical guide to almost-modern beekeeping, Richard Taylor's opus covers everything from hive management to honey sales to wax processing to swarm capture to keeping your neighbors from thinking you're crazy. (Spoiler alert: you can't, so just roll with it.) Much of the knowledge I hear at beekeeping meetings are reiterations of things that Richard Taylor already knew, and wrote about here.

I consult this book often, and have re-read it a dozen or more times cover to cover.

The only caution I would give is that Taylor passed away before varroa, CCD, nosema ceranae, and small hive beetles -- so when it comes to pest management the book is out of date (though the author can hardly be faulted for his lack of immortality, beekeepers may wish to get their guidance on these matters from elsewhere.)

Note: While I'm the president of the Ontario-Finger Lakes Beekeeping Association, my opinions on the book (and well, anything else) are my own, and don't necessarily reflect the views of the club as a whole.

even though this is an old book it touches on alot of things that arent covered in alot of booksI originally found some of his books at book sales and originally started beekeeping after reading some of his original beekeeping books .They touched a chord and allowed me to believe that I could be a beekeeper just for the reasons he expressed. This is one of many of his books but once youve read a few beekeeping writers you can look for the answers to the questions like queen intoduction ,the best time for splits ,enlarging your apiary and a multitude of other questions.
HASH(0x9b86c9a8) out of 5 stars This was my original textbook over thirty years ago. ... Nov. 17 2015

This was my original textbook over thirty years ago. I can't recall but I believe it was gifted to me by a beekeeping neighbor would became my mentor. I read it cover to cover and constantly referenced and reread it as I discovered the wonders of beekeeping.
Sadly the book has long since been misplaced and nothing I read today, while equally informing, can match the grace and deft touch of the late Richard Taylor.
Well worth the time to read as this is material presented in such a way as to become indelible.

I haven't finished reading this. It has great detail and the latest information available by a skilled beekeeper. Tons of valuable information about bees, keeping bees, the hive, the honey. All good!

Too bad that it is out of print. Lots of useful information. Binding is old and dry and needs special care.
