About the Author
Scott Robertson has almost two decades of experience teaching how to design, draw, and render at the highest college level. He has authored or co-authored 11 books on design and concept art. In addition to books, he has co-produced over 40 educational DVDs with The Gnomon Workshop, of which nine feature his own lectures. For several years, Scott chaired the Entertainment Design department at Art Center College of Design. He frequently lectures around the world for various corporations, colleges, and through his own workshop brand, SRW. In addition to teaching, Scott has worked on a wide variety of projects ranging from vehicle and alien designs for the Hot Wheels animated series Battle Force Five, to theme park attractions such as the Men in Black ride in Orlando, Florida for Universal Studios. Some of his clients include the BMW subsidiary Design-works/USA, Bell Sports, Giro, Mattel Toys, Spin Master Toys, Patagonia, the feature film Minority Report, Nike, Rockstar Games, Sony Online Entertainment, Sony Computer Entertainment of America, Buena Vista Games, THQ, and Fiat to name just a few.

This hands-on expertise gives him a distinct approach and remarkable edge in addition to being an acclaimed design educator. that being said, this Book is not an entry level book. this book is for any one who wants to take drawing and design serious.
This book lays the golden brick road to oz for the designer. the amount of useful information that is crammed into this book is astounding nothing to say about the awesome live recorded video examples included for free.
From sketch technique to work flow, digital art experience and of course finely detailed but not bloated training on perspective, these are all covered in detail.
this is simply the best thing next to a personal tutor you can get.
its a must have so buy it period!!!
Note: I have to say for the absolute beginner "perspective made easy" is probably a better choice for you. but when you digest that get this, I feel you have to know something about perspective or design before you can get the most out of this book, not that this book is hard to read or to understand, to the contrary but "how to draw" covers so much in such rich detail that the beginner may not be able to digest the higher concepts at first.
The book covers basic perspective terms, mechanical perspective, curvilinear perspective and various techniques (creating symmetry, taking accurate measurements, creating grids) for drawing in perspective. You will also learn about ellipses (minor axis, how to recognize proper degrees, dividing ellipses). This is not a comprehensive list.
Full examples take you through sketching & designing environments, aircraft, and wheeled vehicles using the concepts above. Plus introductory drawing advice and a section on sketching styles and mediums.
I found it easy to follow with its step-by-step approach and accompanying illustrations. I especially like the video demonstrations which show the concepts in action.
This is a book for artists, architects and designers.
The focus of the book is on perspective, and learning to draw from imagination. There are a lot of step by step instructions. Just copy them and the lesson points will sink in as you practice.
The information is technical, but explained concisely. There are even videos online that goes through the main lesson points again for even more clarity.
Perspective fundamentals are covered comprehensively, and subsequent chapters build on that knowledge to draw subjects of different form, environments, vehicles and aircrafts.
You'll learn stuff like the usual 1-2-3 point perspectives, vanishing points, and also additional bits on cutaways, exploded views, ultra wide angles and more. There are lots of drawing tips.
Compared to other perspective books, examples here are more challenging and stylish, such as cars, planes. curved bodies, instead of the usual houses, railway tracks vanishing to a point. There are plenty of illustrated examples.
One part I like is where he shows off drawing as if they were taken from camera lens at different focal length. The difference in effect is quite stunning and can make a drawing look either dull or dynamic. Throughout the book, he emphasises on using grids and you'll be able to see immediate effects on how that affects the look of your drawing.
There's nothing on drawing shadows though. But if you look at his illustrated examples, you'll see that even without shadows, you can make out the form and shapes of the objects perfectly.
The last section briefly covers several sketching styles and mediums. You can experiment with different styles to suit yourself or the drawing.

By the way, he is also the founder of Design Studio Press and has overseen the publication of many DSP artbooks. Some of those artbooks are actually student projects and you can see what's actually possible when you master the fundamentals taught in this book.
Mine's the paperback edition and the binding seems good enough. There's also the hardcover edition available.
This is a highly recommended indispensable drawing guide.

Drawing, and Drawing "Constructively", are two very different things. And the latter is what will make you a great deal of money if you are looking to get into an industry with your budding talents.
I don't feel that the content in this book is good for those that are looking at Fine Arts, Animation, or comic stripping, just to be clear.
What it does perfectly, is teach you how to draw an object so that you can produce it, or share the idea with another person. That is what a Constructive drawing does, it conveys information.
I'm being specific because the book just say's "How To Draw", and that is how most would read it. So I thought it important to specify, because there are many ways to draw.
Again, this book is the best resource for those looking to get into industrial design, concept artwork, drafting, and other production oriented trades.
I found it perfect for the direction that I'm going in, and I'm a frequent purchaser of Scott Robertson's content. I haven't made more progress with any other form education, and I'm a Fine Arts Graduate.
