Product Description

Inspired by Victor Hugo's classic novel, Disney brings the heroic adventures of Quasimodo, the gentle and lonely bell ringer of Notre Dame, to spectacular life. This critically acclaimed Disney masterpiece is an "uplifting, thrilling story with a heart-touching message that emerges from the comedy and song" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). At the urging of his hilarious gargoyle pals Victor, Hugo, and Laverne, Quasimodo leaves the solitary safety of his tower, venturing out to find his first true friend, the gypsy beauty Esmerelda. The most unlikely of heroes, Quasi fights to save the people and the city he loves and, in turn, helps us to see people for who they are, rather than how they appear. The star-studded voice cast includes Jason Alexander, Tom Hulce, Kevin Kline, and Demi Moore in a magnificent Disney musical from renowned composer Alan Menken.

---------

? Gene Shalit, THE TODAY SHOW

The misconception about this animated film from Disney was that it was a movie for kids--something Victor Hugo never had in mind. In fact, despite a cute brace of singing gargoyles who are Quasimodo's (Tom Hulce) best friends, this version of Hugo's classic tale is really adult entertainment, with a strong set of songs by Alan Menken. The story remains mostly the same (though tricked out with a happier ending than Hugo's): Quasimodo, the ward of repressive monk Frollo, falls for a gypsy girl named Esmerelda (Demi Moore)--though she loves one of the king's guards (Kevin Kline). But they are all put in jeopardy by the wicked Frollo, whose secret passion for Esmerelda leads him to seek her death. At times too dark and even a shade kinky, something that may scare younger viewers. --Marshall Fine --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

One of the remaining classics from Disney's library. Following closely patterns for contemporaries but the story is a classic and the artwork quite good at that time. We miss the early excellence as found in "Snow White", "Bambi". "Pinocchio", "Fantasia" ... drawn artistically with great attention to detail and effect. (Time spent on background, physical features ... ) Faces are somewhat triangular like the Tarzan movie ... Overall presentation good.

Great movie about accepting people despite physical differences. This movie is very touching to me as my nephew has cancer in his eye, and now that its been removed, it has a strange, milky look that is hard to get used to, and my niece has a herniated belly button that other kids make fun of. Every kid should watch this and realize that just because someone may look a little different, they can be just as fun and normal than a kid without the difference.

My 1st cheer is for the fast delivery from Amazonwhen it comes to smallpackages like DVDs.
The second is for the movie I've just watched for my own Movie On Demand. I had read Notre Dame de Paris in my French courses. Disney's rendition is smart. The outcast people in India, the treatment of Gypsie in Europe that still makes the news of the day, the fire and power of Love, the rise of people against injustice, Disney's HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME makes the case, Simply yet powerfuly. People in Iran, North Korea, Syria, China and Russia et all must see it. You bet, the local Frollos Ayatollah and Monarch dictators won't let that happen. More dangerous and dissuasive than sending a few US missiles.

VIDEO:

The Hunchback of Notre Dame I (blu ray):

‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame I’ arrives at blu ray with MPEG-4 AVC 1080p 1.78:1 encode. Colours are warm and vibrant, with bold primaries, rich purples and golds, and deep blacks. Detail is excellent too. The animators' line art is crisp and clean on the whole, the brushstrokes and textures of the hand-painted backgrounds are wonderfully resolved, and the CG elements fare well, even under high definition scrutiny. (4/5)

The Hunchback of Notre Dame II (blu ray):

Like the utterly ugly sequel to 'Pocahontas,' this Direct-To-Video (MPEG-4 AVC 1080p 1.66:1) sucks all the life and charm out of the original animation, instead producing a movie that befits the starkly flat animation of a 'Duck Tales' episode. It's a very sad movie to look at, let alone watch. (1.5/5)

AUDIO:

The Hunchback of Notre Dame I:

Disney has provided a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track for 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame.' The audio mix does a good job at showcasing the movie's musical numbers and also provides ample room for all sorts of ambient sound. The movie's score, however unmemorable, resonates through the channels with stunning clarity. The streets of Paris are alive with the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The clanging of the church bells fills each channel with beautiful echoing. One of the best examples of the encompassing effect of this mix's ability to produce believable ambient sound is during the Festival of Fools when Quasimodo gets mocked. People yell from every direction and voices ping-pong around the soundfield like you were actually standing there. (4/5)

The Hunchback of Notre Dame II:

The sequel's audio mix doesn't turn out as well though.

I like this movie, but I'm going to focus on the DVD itself as opposed to the actual film.

I don't have a whole to say other than that the movie has a bit of a theater-quality look to it, which I don't mind. The special features are good, but not too extravagant. Some of these features include a sing-along song and a "Making of.." feature with an amusing appearance by Jason Alexander (voice of Hugo) as the host of the feature.

Overall, this DVD edition is pretty good, but nothing too special. However, it's still worth buying.
