Review

"The Hundred Mile View is an exhilarating crime novel. By turns lyrical and brutal, C.J. Howell creates a Southwest steeped in violence and methamphetamine-fueled insanity. An instant masterpiece." -JON BASSOFF, author of The Incurables

"A fine addition to the Desert Noir subgenre. Unpredictable and alluring, Howell's latest blends crime writing with morality tale, action with ennui, to produce a novel that is so ferocious I wanted to back away, but was mesmerized by its pacing and sleek beauty." -CB McKENZIE, author of the Spur Award-winning and Edgar-nominated Bad Country and Burn What Will Burn "Stunning and unflinching. C.J. Howell expertly explores the shadows of reservation life where nothing is what it seems and no one can be trusted. This is a tautly written and gripping crime novel with nuanced characters who linger long after the last page is turned." -MARGARET COEL, author of The Man Who Fell From the Sky "The Hundred Mile View is an exhilarating crime novel. By turns lyrical and brutal, C.J. Howell creates a Southwest steeped in violence and methamphetamine-fueled insanity. An instant masterpiece." -JON BASSOFF, author of The Incurables

HASH(0x9bb9c87c) out of 5 stars Man-oh-Man! July 14 2016
By Billy Kring - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
What a story! C. J. Howell gives the reader a dark tale set in a locale few people know or understand. He weaves in Navajo superstitions and beliefs, drugs and violence, and a few lost souls who struggle to do right. Howell's descriptions of the Navajo reservation make you feel like you are there experiencing everything under the wide southwestern sky. And his characters, man oh man, do they leap off the page into your head! The Shaman and his henchmen will make your skin prickle, and Jake and Aimee will have you rooting for them on every page. I'm not spoiling it here, but the ending is amazing! If you enjoy mystery and suspense and stories set in the southwest, you owe it to yourself to get this book. You will be happy you did.
HASH(0x9b848708) out of 5 stars Dark Story, Great Read! June 28 2016

I thoroughly enjoyed the Hundred Mile View. The main characters are interesting, complex and flawed which draws you in and makes you want to understand even more about their lives. It is a fast-paced story and the chapter set up suits the plot perfectly, making it an easy read to pick up and put down again for later, or to run through in one sitting. Howell's descriptive writing makes the desert geography of the Southwest US come alive as well, very much another character in the story. A great follow up effort for Howell, looking forward to the next one. I'd recommend The Last of the Smoking Bartenders too if you like this one as much as I did.
HASH(0x9b9ec0d8) out of 5 stars Exceptionally well crafted. Perfect sense of place and tone. March 21 2016

The kind of novel that makes the desert seem hauntingly beautiful but also like a place you'd never want to visit. Like most great noir novels, the sense of waste and corruption hangs heavily over everything. The protagonist is driven by impulses he can't bear to acknowledge and pitted against forces he can barely sense, let alone comprehend. A powerful second effort by CJ Howell and hopefully a sign of great things to come. Pulls double duty as a terrific detective story and a cautionary 'don't do meth' PSA.

C.J. Howell out did himself on this story. Intense and fun. A great book to read during a beach or cabin vacation. Would pair equally well with corona, margaritas or bourbon.
