"The Hunger Games" was one of the most anticipated movies of 2012 -- and so the music is almost as anticipated.

Well, despite the presence of Maroon 5 and Taylor Swift, it's a very NON-poppy collection of songs -- it's a smooth combination of folk, rock, and country, imbued with a sense of ominous bittersweetness. There are a few rock numbers mixed in, but "The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 And Beyond" is a very quiet, haunted affair.

It kicks off with Arcade Fire's slow-blazing "Abraham's Daughter"; it really brings across a dark, desperate feeling with a girl's swirling vocals in the middle of it all, with danger roaring on every side of her. It is AWESOME.

From there, we hear a string of quieter songs -- the Secret Sisters' softly uplifting "Tomorrow Will Be Kinder"; Neko Case's rippling "Nothing To Remember"; the Civil Wars' trembling duet "Kingdom Come"; the Low Anthem's murky "Lover is Childlike"; Jayme Dee's warmly contemplative "Rules"; and finally Birdy's bittersweet piano ballad "Just A Game."

Maroon 5 also abandons their usual sound, producing a rippling, dark ballad called "Come Away To The Water." As for Taylor Swift... "Safe and Sound" is a misty, soft-edged ballad that sounds beautiful, but "Eyes Open" is sharper and a bit shriller.

But in the midst of all this mellow, softer stuff, there are a few rock numbers. There's Kid Cudi's buzzing, threatening "The Ruler and the Killer," and Glen Hansard's overwrought "Take The Heartland." And God bless 'em, the Decemberists produce a perfect fusion of folk/country and rock in "One Engine.

I was disappointed as the whole reason I bought it was to get Rue's Lullaby but a) it's a MP3 you are supposed to download but the website doesn't work for me and b) it's sung by Taylor Swift and not the original artist in the film (who I assume is Jennifer Lawrence but may not be.)

The CD itself is fine and came in plastic wrap

I love this CD. All of the music has a country, blue-grass, rock feel to it. It's relaxing and energizing. I love the combination of the songs. I love that all the music was specifically written for this soundtrack so it makes me think of the book and movie. I love it.

Dads take note: If you want to score major brownie points with your teenage daughter, take her to see the movie and buy the cd. It's a good thing CDs don't wear out like the old cassette tapes did. My daughter is playing this multiple times every day.

Although the all the soundtrack's songs don't appear in the movie, it is a very good companion audio CD. The songs included are referable to the series, like "Come Away to the Water" - "Maroon 5" is referable to the lake found in the woods that Katniss and her father went to before he died, or Miranda Lambert's "Run Daddy Run" referencing to her father trying to run before the grasp of the explosions catch him in the mine. The songs vary in artists spanning from "Kid Cudi" to "Miranda Lambert". The music is mostly country like music, but don't worry, I myself am into rock, techno, some metal, and some others and still throughout it enjoyed the album. The reason behind this is Suzanne Collins had hinted at that DISTRICT 12 was in a southern part of america, and they listen to alot of country. The album complements the movie when they do appear in the movie like "Abraham's Daughter - Arcade Fire" at the very end of the movie, creeping into the closing credits. Overall it is a very pleasant experience to listen to the CD.
The package itself is very professional looking. This is the "Limited Deluxe Edition" and it is alot like the DIGIBOOKS of the CD'S. When opening it you see the posters of Effie, Haymitch, Gale, Peeta, and Katniss. The faded corners of the images compliment the dark casing immensely. It also includes a poster, and some trading cards.
This is a very affordable product that provides great music, and extremely appealing packaging. It leaves you with a good amount of music and a great addition to anyone's collection of CD's.
