A fairly short story which I understand is a prequel to other books by Melissa Snark.
Victoria is a wolf shifter with magic,a priestess to the norse Freya and she works as a nurse. Just before leaving work, for a short holiday, she helps the ghost of a woman worried about her children. Her coworkers notice a male hunk, Daniel, who asks Victoria to help him find a missing hunter she has met several times as a patient. It is Halloween and people have disappeared on previous years. She agrees to help search. It is not uneventful.
Okay folks I read this when it appeared in an anthology so I am copying/pasting my tiny review from that. but note this that I loved it enough to buy the story again.
Hunter's Mark by Melissa Snark
So now I know more about Daniel and Victoria's relationship. I often wondered about them. I wish Ms. Snark would have given us their first date but that second one is a doozy.
I encourage you to pick up her Loki's Wolves series Victoria has come a long way from that awesome second date.

My favorite stories by Ms. Snark are from the Loki's Wolves series which are woven with Norse mythology. This is one of them. The characters are drawn so clearly that they come to life as I read.
Daniel Barrett is very appealing; Victoria is simply awesome. The dialog is witty. The two of them together are magical. Yes, there are ghosts. They're not all nice! Daniel and Victoria must use everything they've got to succeed in this fast paced adventure. This is a splendid book - perfect reading material at any time, but especially for Halloween! I voluntarily reviewed an author's copy.
