Praise for The Husband's Secret

The Husband's Secret is a smart, thoughtful read… [a] lip-smacking and intelligently written novel.”—Entertainment Weekly

“Who says beach reads can't make you think? This classy romance does.”—People

“Moriarty may be an edgier, more provocative and bolder successor to Maeve Binchy.”—Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“[A] multi-layered page-turner…The ultimate page-turner. … I devoured it in one deliciously unfettered day, unable to stop reading … Moriarty capably handles her cast of characters, weaving their stories together into a fascinating tapestry… No reader will manage to resist plunging onward.”—BookReporter.com

“Amid three intertwined story lines and terrific plot twists, Moriarty presents a nuanced and moving portrait of the meaning of love, both marital and familial, and how life can hinge on a misunderstanding or a decision made in haste. The Husband’s Secret is so good, you won’t be able to keep it to yourself.”—USA Today

“For a provocative page-turner, read The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty.”—Woman’s World

“The genius of The Husband’s Secret is that it makes us start to wonder what in our own lives would—or would not—have happened if, say, we had waited just five more minutes before we walked out the door, had not said that hurtful thing, had applied a bit of logic to that situation.” —Bookpage

“Reading groups rejoice. This meaty novel from the bestselling author (The Hypnotist’s Love Story, What Alice Forgot) will probably land on many must-read lists.”—Dallas-Fort Worth Star-Telegram

“Simultaneously a page-turner and a book one has to put down occasionally to think about and absorb, Moriarty’s novel challenges the reader as well as her characters, but in the best possible way.”—Publishers Weekly

“Weaving stories from multiple perspectives keeps this one interesting all while leaving the reader wondering what will happen next. This great summer read is hard to put down.”—Library Journal

I'd likely give this 3 1/2 rather than just 3. But I just don't think it rates a 4.
This was read for our book club.

For a synopsis, see the publisher's blurb.

The story moved along nicely and got very interesting once the secret was revealed. It's nothing like a husband having an affair so it's not about some ubiquitous love triangle. I will admit, however, at one point as one of the twists began to unfold, I could tell what was going to happen. That's not a negative by the way. I truly found this story of intertwined lives relatable and of genuine interest. Even though I give this 3 1/2 stars this takes nothing away from the story - well done. A recommended easy-reading novel.

If you've read "A Casual Vacancy" by JK Rowling, this book takes a similar storytelling path where several people and social issues collide. At 416 pages total, it's about 50 pages too long with unnecessary detail, poor editing and a grammar error at the beginning of chapter twelve (Kindle edition). As the title suggests there is a main secret (among others) that is revealed, but it's at an awkward, anticlimactic near midpoint making you wait a long time for outcome. This book lacked the character charm and wit of her other works, which was a disappointment. I hung in there for the sake of closure, but didn't like the ending.

I enjoyed the charm and wit of "What Alice Forgot" and "The Last Anniversary". I also liked the character development of the more serious "The Hypnotist's Love Story". All three of these were very good. "Best Wishes" was my least favourite (being too choppy), which is now tied with this one. Better luck next time.

I've enjoyed Lianne Moriarty's other books and especially liked "What Alice Forgot." This book was a quick read, not hard to get into, but just not that interesting. At the heart of the novel is a wife's discovery of a letter from her husband to be opened in the event of his death. A big secret is revealed--but it takes until the middle of the book for the letter to be opened and then only a few words of the letter are revealed. It was a very long buildup. In the meantime only three characters are developed: the wife, an older woman named Rachel and a younger woman named Claire. The three strands of the story seemed mechanical to me. I read it in a day and a half at home with a cold, but can't say I would recommend it.

I'm not a verified purchaser because I got this book second hand. I had no expectations - I just wanted something to read and the synopsis made me curious. At first it confused me as each chapter was about a different character but there was enough intrigue to keep me going. All the characters tie in nicely and I was caught up in their stories.

The protagonist's dilemma was what really got to me - what would I do? All the characters are brought together when an ironic, climatic event happens.

It was toward the end when I really appreciated the metaphor of the Berlin Wall. I thought about it long after I finished reading it. Well done! I am looking forward to reading more of Moriarty's books.

Don't be discouraged by all the characters. Moriarity brings them together beautifully. The imagery of the Berlin Wall is a very effective Freedom symbol. Powerful relationships and secrets impact generations.

I loved this novel. It was a true page-turner... and I found that as I neared the end, the chapters got shorter and shorter so I could rationalize reading just another chapter before going to bed. Liane Moriarty is a very talented writer. It is truly a craft to weave such a story-with all of the characters being connected in one way or another. I am looking forward to reading more of her work very soon!

This book was hard to get into but at the half way point it all comes together and takes off.
An amazing twist near the end brings it all to a satisfying conclusion.

It was a good summer read. The husband's actual secret came as a surprise to me so it had some suspense to it as well. The characters were likable.
