HASH(0xa7317f48) out of 5 stars Not exciting, suspenseful or sexy to me March 15 2011
By AmazonCustomer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
This book is romantic suspense, but it wasn't very exciting, suspenseful or sexy to me. The overall story falls flat for me; I kept wanting more, expecting more, because there was room for it.

The hero is a CIA operative, part of a secret shadow agency, targeting terrorists using/buying chemical weapons. The heroine, who used to be an L.A. cop/forensic lab scientist, is now a chemist and his #1 supsect since her co-worker Richard is dead. The plot revolves around who has the chemical weapon formula and who is trying to sell it to terrorists. Not much is explained or used in the plot about who the terrorists are. For two law enforcement types, both main characters do some implausible or even stupid things during the course of the investigation. Stuff that just made me shake my head. The kind of silly stuff like in a horror movie that has you screaming at the screen, NO!

Burke and Eve get together about 45% through the story, and while that was sweet, it was not erotic and maybe only a little bit sexy, at least for me. There hardly seemed to be any sexual tension, and I really would have loved that, considering they are alone together, hiding out in his cabin, on the run. I needed to see more of that 'I want you but I don't want to want you' attitude. I wanted to see more sexual chemistry hampered by mistrust or outside danger.

I feel the plot is too handily wrapped up. It all seemed to come together a bit too easy: the romance, the baddie, and the attempts on Eve's life, --- spoiler ---- like the one where Burke has 3 minutes to diffuse a bomb. Is he sweating bullets? Is she crying or shaking? No, he just reaches for a conveniently found knife and cuts the bomb from her. There, done and dusted. No supsense for me. Of course, we know he's going to rescue her, but I still think it needed to be stretched out more, just a little more nail-biting at least.

HASH(0xa76f8498) out of 5 stars A waste of time July 9 2013
By PChick83 - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I normally don't review books, I think it can spoil the story for someone else, but this book was too bad for me not to review. Some of this could spoil it, so in brief: the story is inconsistent, not sexy, not a mystery, poor plot, poor character development and no where near Stephanie Bond or Nora Roberts/jd Robb.

Potential spoilers:...........……………………………………………

You start with a car chase, including a speeding Porsche going around curves before the driver has trouble. This "new personal car" is being driven across the country from where the driver and his coworker live... Poor plot line #1. This continues with the passenger able to stop the car from going off the edge from their seat... And stopping just in time to get arrested as a terrorist by the men behind them.

The "secret agent" with no real credentials but a quick flash of his badge gets the "former LAPD officer" (slash forensic chemist) to go with him on a ruse to find the buyer of a secret formula to make a "better" chemical weapon even though she's raster and facing lifetime charges as soon as she's done "helping".....first, why wouldn't she call him in and confirm? Second, who would trust the flip of a badge, much less a former officer? Third, if they really thought she was a terrorist, why wouldn't they move her to maximum security, or at least more than ONE person guarding her? And at least put on handcuffs!

Next, they go to a "conference" for chemists... At least give us a name! They go to one lecture, then sneak out (how rude!) and hide for two hours, before going back. They then leave, and that's the end of the conference - the one she drove across the country for, with all her colleagues and the potential buyer...

The next steps include the "heroine" being almost killed twice in silly, very unrealistic, ways before the solo agent takes her to his personal secret cabin. They fall madly in lust, even though she's supposedly a major terrorist rest to this country and he's in charge of her, have sex lots of times throughout the days, even though its been five years for her (or something like that), discuss her dead daughter (who was some age, we aren't sure, 1, 5, ? The numbers don't match up here at all), her ex, and his family. Details are vague and while I think that it's supposed to make them closer, it just fills pages.

Some action occurs, the author attempts to make you think the bad guy is one person when it's not, and then the final showdown occurs, they say "I love you", then part for a month, or a week, or so, again, vague (or rather, one pages says one thing, the next page another thing). Then they come together, love each other instantly, and she magically becomes part of his secret team with no tests, training, government approval, etc.

Overall, I felt the book was inconsistent from page to page, it was vague and poorly edited for consistency, it was not a good mystery or a good romance and it did not live up to any science in the pages. At the end, you get a bit of a set up to the next story, but I for one won't be reading it.

HASH(0xa77f04bc) out of 5 stars Inconsistent mess July 7 2013
By SouthernBelle - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
What a mess this was. Convoluted and not in a keep you guessing edge of you seat way rather a "Well, which is it?" Cry of frustration every few pages. Is Eve a former police officer turned chemist or is she a chemist who worked in a police forensic lab? It literally changed from one page to the next. Is Burke the boss of this special group he recruited and if he was he he doesn't seem to know any of the people who work for him. This tidbit was just thrown out about 70% of the way through the book. I forced myself to continue after the completely implausible attempts on Eve's life. If her quick acting and slow acting insulin had been switched when the antagonist said she would have gotten ill the day before she did. A bomb in a hair dryer? What triggered it, a timer? She has to plug it in to use it so why not have it set to explode when she turns it on? A lot more reliable that hoping she's there when it blows. This brings me to yet another of the passages where you shake your head and say "what the...?" Explosion sets the room on fire, immediately smoke is so thick she can't see. Burke runs in, gets her out, returns to the burning cabin and immediately finds her purse with her insulin, then finds a piece of her hairdryer with part of the bomb attached to it in the smoke filled cabin!!! Are you serious? Its so implausible I couldn't go on. This is just a small sampling of the inconsistencies and idiocy of this book. The dialog is often very stilted and awkward too.

There seemed to more sex than mystery. For a free book I managed to get through it but the sex part I found way to explicit so did skip through some parts.

Loved this book, the dynamics and action in this story will have you entertained and on the edge of the seat. The characters are very well written and easy to get wrapped up in. The mystery will have you guessing till the end, I though I knew who it was untill it was revealed, I enjoyed it! I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!
