The author speaks from the heart directly to the hearts of her readers.
I have since shared this book with other peers who have lost parents or spouses. They are all touched and affected and comforted by this lovely story.
If Only is not for YA readers only. It belongs on the shelves of school and public libraries, counseling and grief centers, and as a gift anyone can offer to a friend.
Reading the book I felt that I was reading the story of my life. I lost my father when I was 15. He was young and strong. It had never crossed my mind that one day he would leave us. But it happened. Like Corina, I became angry, withdrawn, insecure, and felt different from my friends. And like Corina, I tried to recover, "tiny bit by tiny bit." Although it has been many years since then, I am still not there yet.
Grief is hard and some people suffer from it more than others. In her book, Carol Geithner has captured the essence of this suffering in a beautiful and gentle way. I wished I had read this book when I was 15 and was grieving and hurting. It would have shown me that I was not the only one who was going through such pains, and that my fears and insecurities were not my problems but part of a difficult, long process that is grieving.
I bought "If Only" for my 14 yr. old granddaughter, but I am also giving a copy to my 12 yr. old grandson, as well as adult family members and friends. It is a gift about life.
