What other readers have to say about The Illegal Gardener ...

'A really intelligent, moving book.'

'Sensitive with beautifully crafted characters that you really cared about.'

'The Illegal Gardener' is a story of betrayal, love, trust and friendship. Not a romance but perhaps a lesson in life on just how young minds can be damaged by spite or thoughtlessness, and how those same minds can be repaired by true friends.'

'I was captivated from the start unable to put the book down.'

'The Illegal Gardener' is a delightful story, filled not only with love of Greece but a deep understanding of the varieties of love which can bring people together.'

'reminiscent of Remains of the Day.'

'The author has huge potential and if she keeps writing and developing like this then I wouldn't be at all surprised to see her name on a future Man Booker list!'

'A good tale well told. Shades of Steinbeck and Bradbury.'

'A most charming and sensitive book.'

I give this book five stars because it is well written. The story does move along and the reader is kept engrossed till the end. I felt that Alexi had done her research very well. I like the story very much. Having travelled through Europe one is aware of illegal immigration but we tend to ignore it. It is an overwhelming problem. Alexi takes one Pakistani man and rips apart all pre conceived notions about why he is there; who he really is; how he lives and what he lives on; she gives him a voice. This takes place in a lovely Greek setting, a garden. He is hired to clean up her garden.

I would recommend this book. It is a heartwarming story of triumph over circumstance and one woman's befriending of an illegal immigrant.

This book was a pleasant read over a two week vacation. In other words a relaxing novel which held my interest over long flights and several 9 hour bus rides. It is a story of a relationship between a woman who moved to Greece and an illegal Pakistani immigrant. The relationship takes many twists and turns resulting in a surprising yet heartwarming finale. I would recommend this book - it was entertaining , not complicated by numerous characters, focused but not simplistic. If you like heartwarming novels this is a good selection.

This was such an enjoyable read. The narrative was concise but descriptive and real. The characters were heroic but simple and so easy to empathize with because they were well developed and not one dimensional. Learning about them was like unfolding a gift, layer after layer. Aaman's story teaches you to appreciate what you take for granted.

I recommend this book and can't wait to start the second volume.

Tales from the Greek Islands. Can never go wrong. Relationship between Juliet and Aaman sometimes seems a title too contrived and unrealistic.
