From Library Journal
Thomas and Johnston, two of Disney's original animators, here give the inside scoop on how the studio created the works that have charmed the world. "The text is ambitious," said LJ's reviewer (LJ 12/15/81). The "authors simultaneously give a history of Disney animation and explain the processes involved in clear, nontechnical terms." Along with the splendid text are dozens of color and black-and-white photographs and illustrations. A "magnificent volume" that remains "essential for film collections and a feast for the most casual peruser."

I do think it's important to note that while this book will give you good insight into animation, it won't tell you how to do things. It will tell you how THOSE artists did things, and every artist has their own process and every project has its own criteria and pace. For those learning to animate, this won't be a book that teaches you the 12 principles or guide you step by step on how to be come a successful artist. If anything, it will just demonstrate how much time and effort goes into the success of past and existing artists.
I am not a big reader so it was a gamble for me to get this book but it teaches you so much. It's not really based to teach you animation but to help you understand how it works. There is ALOT of great finished artwork, backgrounds, rough sketches, etc. This book is also written really good so every little detail is described.
This is honestly great for anyone who is interested in animation or even if you're just a Disney lover, collector, etc. This book is a must have, literally!
The pages are nice and thick with a glossy finish, the hardcover is thick, the book is farely big and it contains over 600 pages which I personally thought was amazing. Lol.
Now, if you're a Disney lover and an animation freak, this is definitely a must have. If you see this book elsewhere not for sale, you will regret not buying this. I'm extremely happy I didn't pass up the offer that I originally passed up.
Last thing, this book is written by "Ollie Johnston & Frank Thomas" who were both basically inventors of the hand draw animation you see from the 30's to today's hand drawn cartoons. There's even homeage being paid with some history on animators from the 1800's and the first interactive animated feature with a dinosaur.
An amazing book-both from a historical/nostalgic viewpoint and a good reference tool for wannabe animators. You still need to know the basics of animation while using advanced animation programs.
