HASH(0xa6b25288) out of 5 stars An Excellent Read Feb. 2 2015
By Eat Sleep Read Review - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Jillian David hits the ground running with her debut novel, Immortal Flame. An interesting tale of immortal, Peter Blackstone and gifted emergency room doctor, Allison La Croix, Jillian David has created an intriguing story of pain, suffering and love.

I was immediately fascinated with Allison’s ability and how it impacted her life and relationships. The fact that she chose to be a doctor, knowing she might suffer from seeing the death of anyone she potentially comes in contact with, shows that she’s both strong and caring. And there isn’t a woman alive (or dead) that wouldn’t fall in love with Peter. He’s sexy, protective and a little mysterious. The circumstances that brought him to be an immortal was both heart-wrenching and gallant.

Packed with scorching love scenes, a bit of mystery and plenty of action, Jillian David keeps you wanting more from the very beginning. The compelling chemistry between Allison and Peter makes the romance truly believable and allows you to fully connect with the story. Without giving away any spoilers, I did find some of the secondary characters not as well developed, which did bring up some questions near the end of the book about the interactions between Allison and her family, but overall, this was an excellent read and one that I very much recommend.

My Thoughts - Story
Wow…just wow! I am in shock with how much I enjoyed this book. It totally took me off guard because by reading the synopsis – I honestly didn’t think I was going to like it.

The writing is fantastic – and the way Ms. David uses descriptive information, I felt I was playing the movie out in my head. I could see the characters, the scenery and everything else that was going on.

I instantly connected with Allison and loved her character the most. That little spitfire was a hero in my book. Now, Peter I had to warm up to him but once he chilled out…he had a spot in my heart. I also loved the secondary characters and can’t wait for Dante’s book.

For this being a debut book – my hat goes off to Ms. David!

Allison has the ability to see a person’s death and it happens quickly after. Is this a curse or a gift? Living with this curse, Allison tries her best to control it until she meets Peter. The mysterious patient who came in and healed quickly.

Peter has sold his soul to the devil and is his minion in killing criminals to feed energy to the big ole’ skeezy Satan. He is bound to hell until he has his Meaningful Kill. In constant turmoil over what he has to do, Allison seems to be the only one who calms him.

These two must work together if they want a future together.

HASH(0xa748f99c) out of 5 stars Great writing but not-so-great characters July 23 2015

REVIEWED BY LIZ (originally posted on Kindles & Wine Book Blog)

Allison wasn't a particularly dynamic character to me. She was an ER doctor, which is exciting, right? So she should feel at least a little dynamic. But the main characteristic that I got from her personality was: depressing. In the story, Allison had the ability to see some people's deaths when she would touch them, and for some reason, Allison blamed herself for those deaths. She's definitely not causing them, she only sees them. So why blame herself? I could never figure it out and it never made sense to me. I also though she was way too harsh with the hero when he reveals his past and some of the things he's done. It made her unlikable and unsympathetic for me.

I found the hero, Peter, to be unusual but in an interesting way. He was barely 100 years old but looked to be around 30. Most paranormal characters are several hundreds of years old, so Peter's mere 100 years wasn't super impressive. Plus, his friends are all over 300 years old, making Peter the baby of the bunch (relatively speaking, of course, LOL!). Like Allison, he was a bit of a sad sack. Peter feels guilt for the things he's had to do and that's the main crux of his character--guilt and his struggle with the unfamiliar feelings he has toward Allison. I really liked that it was all new territory for him. I also liked that he was immediately protective of Allison but appreciated that it wasn't insta-love.

I'm on the fence about the relationship between Allison and Peter. The romance-loving side of me liked that they took it slow. They didn't jump right into bed or anything. There was mistrust, which turned into trust, then into affection and on from there. But the real-world side of me, the cynical side, didn't like that Allison was a bit of a jerk to Peter and how he just kind of took it.

This was an interesting start to a new series, but I didn't love it. While it was nice that there was no complex worldbuilding, I still felt pretty confused for the first couple of chapters. I would encourage readers who pick up this book to just go with it because it eventually makes more sense. I enjoyed the mysterious aspect to the story and felt like the story was well paced, but I didn't connect to the characters as much as I'd hoped to. Even so, I thought the writing was great and the author has snagged my interest in this world enough that I'll continue on with the series.

Great writing and an interesting world kept me engaged until the end of IMMORTAL FLAME despite my difficulty connecting to the morose and somewhat unlikable characters. Fans of paranormal romance who like a slightly darker hero and heroine might enjoy this book.

Such an awesome read. As soon as I started it, I couldn't put it down. I even stayed home from the gym just to be able to finish this in the same day.
I found that the plot worked well with the characters and found them very interesting.
I definitely recommend this book if you love suspense, action and paranormal romance!

This really was a great book. Part romance, smidgen of sex, a bit "other worldly" suspenseful, just over all amazing! Plus I love the fact that I'm not left hanging at the end, forced to purchase another book to end this story line...I hate when that happens! Definitely recommend!
