My instructor used this book for an InDesign course, and I found it very helpful. It's not an attractive guide for beginners, but once you're comfortable with InDesign, this is an excellent resource. The index in the back is extensive, and this is my number one resource when I'm doing layout.

Not at all what I would expect from a how-to-use book about graphic design software. Difficult to read/follow; printed in newspaper columns, 2 per page; and all in BLACK AND WHITE! Who would ever think to publish a book about computer graphics software in black and white? Unbelievable! I returned it as soon as I opened it.

HASH(0xa3cd5870) out of 5 stars Excellent reference book April 30 2011

As a professional InDesign trainer, I used 75 copies of this book - purchased from Amazon - during my training seminars this month.
The black and white format allows adult learners to effectively make notes and mark up important items with a red pen.

With a background in graphic design, I appreciate the clean 2 column pages, large and plentiful screen captures and indented step by step instructions. Adequate white space avoids overwhelming visual clutter typical of other books.

A consistent thread of lighthearted reference to the Wizard of Oz in graphic examples keeps you smiling while learning the software.

Sandee Cohen is an expert in InDesign, graphic design, technical writing and teaching this material - a winning combination.

HASH(0xa3cd5a80) out of 5 stars Great Reference Book Jan. 23 2011

I use In-Design and have found this to be a great quick reference guide to help when you have a question. It is also great to review before you purchase In-Deisgn so you know what it can do. I recommend this to anyone.

HASH(0xa3cd5a44) out of 5 stars Extremely satisfied User Nov. 28 2011

The author did a superb job of focusing her information in an orderly manner, and then presenting it using two techniques which make it virtually impossible to not understand the process. First, on one half of the page she gives you the Commands and Actions required; Second she shows you on the second half of the page images of what you should select. I find that this book is clear, precise, and extremely valuable, certainly for the new user of InDesign. Finally, she provides a detailed, carefully presented Index so you can find solutions to the problems you wish to solve. I recommend this book without reservations, and find the price very reasonable InDesign CS5 for Macintosh and Windows: Visual QuickStart Guide (Visual Quickstart Guides)

HASH(0xa3cd5d38) out of 5 stars Pretty good, very detailed Sept. 14 2014

Pretty good, very detailed. "quick" is something of a misnomer. On the other hand, EVERYTHING i want to know about InDesign is there, and stuff I never thought of. A great reference, not a good choice if you're not already up to speed on InDesign.

HASH(0xa3cd5dd4) out of 5 stars Good information June 6 2011

Two complaints I have read about this book are that it has no color pictures and that it tells you little about design. The reasons are as follows. This is a $20 book that is packed with functional information. It has an enormous amount of information in regard to the use and function of InDesign. Add color and you are adding ten to fifteen bucks to the price and getting the same information. The illustrations are slightly low resolution, but they are still perfectly clear as to relay specific information.

This book is not a book on design. There are many great books on design, many are expensive, and they have great, high resolution, illustrations and photo's. This book is here to show you how to use InDesign. It assumes you already know how to design.

I am an experienced designer and really appreciate the information in this inexpensive book. I use it as a reference on the new features, and to refresh myself on older features I may not use every day.

This Quick Start guide is a very good reference and a great guide to getting started. Just as the title states.
