Independence Day [Import]
One of the biggest box office hits of all time delivers the ultimate encounter when mysterious and powerful aliens launch an all-out invasion against the human race. The spectacle begins when massive spaceships appear in Earth's skies. But wonder turns to terror as the ships blast destructive beams of fire down on cities all over the planet. Now the world's only hope lies with a determinded band of survivors, uniting for one last strike against the invaders - before it's the end of all mankind.
In Independence Day, a scientist played by Jeff Goldblum once actually had a fistfight with a man (Bill Pullman) who is now president of the United States. That same president, late in the film, personally flies a jet fighter to deliver a payload of missiles against an attack by extraterrestrials. Independence Day is the kind of movie so giddy with its own outrageousness that one doesn't even blink at such howlers in the plot. Directed by Roland Emmerich, Independence Day is a pastiche of conventions from flying-saucer movies from the 1940s and 1950s, replete with icky monsters and bizarre coincidences that create convenient shortcuts in the story. (Such as the way the girlfriend of one of the film's heroes--played by Will Smith--just happens to run across the president's injured wife, who are then both rescued by Smith's character who somehow runs across them in alien-ravaged Los Angeles County.) The movie is just sheer fun, aided by a cast that knows how to balance the retro requirements of the genre with a more contemporary feel. --Tom KeoghSee all Product Description

This popcorn flick was all that I hoped for, nothing but 100% of everything: action, drama, humor and suspense. Many people are justified in stating that the success of "Independence Day" comes from the fact that its nothing more than what its intended to be: FUN, period.
However, in this day and age of constant threats to modern society from epidemics such as war and disease, "Independence Day" can suddenly mean more than just a cinematic escape from reality. Perhaps it symbolizes the power and determination of the human spirit to prevail against all odds. Well, I most certainly think so! Just observe the plot and you'll find out what I mean:
Several gigantic UFOs, dwarfing anything which mankind can possibly conceive, suddenly hover above major cities all over the world. Without warning, these alien ships simultaneously strike the heart of the cities with awesome laser beams, causing vast proportions of horrific destruction. Just when it seems that all is lost for the citizens of the Planet Earth, a courageous band of human rebels join forces to combat this seemingly impregnable terror. These rebels come from all walks of life, from the dead serious to the outrageously funny. You've got Will Smith, a fighter pilot with a mouth of a wise guy but having a heart of gold; Jeff Goldblum, the computer nerd who knows how to decode the alien bad guys; and Bill Pullman, the dedicated U.S. president who will stop at nothing to preserve the survival of the human race.Read more ›
Note of interest to Independence Day fans.
I bought this title and was surprised that the "Special Edition" cut of Independence Day was not on this Blu-ray release as it was listed in the Special Features on Amazon's website. Very disappointed in the listing and the release!
will surely enjoy this film. Its lots of fun, lots of effects and
does not stop till the film ends.
Its quite a good Alien invasion film.
But Warning,, reading other reviews it seems people either love
it or really really hate it.....
To me, this film hits the right buttons........
The now deceased former longshoreman and popular philosopher Eric Hoffer once said, "The nature of the American is that he is a hustler."
After seeing "ID4: Independence Day", Hoffer's idea becomes larger than life. Someone obviously wanted to make a quick buck for their stockholders, and they didn't care how. What was produced in "ID4: Independence Day" is the cinematic equivalent of junk food.
If there's any doubt about that, just try watching this film twice. It's as if the producers of this film were saying "No one ever went broke underestimating the tastes of the American public, so just give us your money. Up with us and (screw) you!"
The ridiculous storyline notwithstanding, what makes this film more than annoying is an arrogant display of religious ethnicity: Two of the main characters are portrayed as saintlike beings as a result of their affiliation with a certain faith. This genre of movie is supposed to mindless camp. Instead, "ID4: Independence Day" turns out to be a stab at politically correct mindless camp.
Of course, the film was promoted mercilessly. The vast amount of money that went into the production and promotion of this abortion would have been better served elsewhere... and I do mean anywhere else.
In contrast, the films of the late sixties and seventies were experimental, creative and interesting. Movies like "Little Big Man", "The French Connection", "The Godfather", and "Rocky" were all large budget studio films that managed to make a buck, yet still have some integrity. Today, integrity doesn't count.
You don't either. Just hand over your money.
There's a fantastic amount of extra bits on this DVD, and along with 'The Matrix' this is a model of how to do this kind of thing - there's an alternative ending, one which makes you glad that they ditched it, some extra 'special edition' sequences, two 'Making of' documentaries, an amusing 'Blair Witch' / Orson Welles-esque fake news documentary on the alien menace, and some interesting commentaries. Furthermore, as it is split over two discs, the picture and sound quality is superb.
