I enjoyed this thriller by David Baldacci. He manages to add nuances to the usual clichés in the genre to craft a different kind of story where a government assassin finds himself facing ethical and emotional issues that he doesn't expect. While it's hardly a deep-character-development novel, Baldacci succeeds in making his characters interesting and attractive enough to keep you turning the pages.
While all thrillers are a bit near the top, if not over it, I found that this one contained elements that made it seem more realistic at times than most of the genre. That was due to careful plotting that I admired while reading the book . . . and even more after finishing it.
I also liked the way the plot twists were designed to reveal new clues concerning what is really going on.
If you've liked any earlier David Baldacci books, I think you'll like this one.
The book begins by establishing the solitary work of Will Robie in getting rid of the bad guys under difficult circumstances. After you are well into that, he comes to a hit that surprises him . . . and leads to some unexpected events. In the course of those events, he meets a runaway girl who attracts his protective instincts. In a role reversal, he ends up trying to look out for her while taking care of his own precarious business. It makes for some amusing scenes and sequences that humanize the thriller and increase its appeal.
Will Robi is a complex man. He is a stone cold killer, who has spent the last dozen years traveling the world, carrying out “sanctioned assassins” for a clandestine agency in the US government.
Will wasn’t born a killer but we never learn how he became one. Still underneath it all, he does have emotions and feelings that he seldom lets surface. When he is given an assignment to take out his next victim, something doesn’t feel right about it, and when he arrives at the apartment he realises that his hit is a woman with a child. He does not kill her.
Then Will Robi, the Assassin, becomes the target for assassination. Eventually he realises that he was always the target, part of a much larger scheme. He has no idea who he can trust, because it becomes clear that moles have infiltrated all government agencies.
The Innocent is a spellbinding read—also the story of a ruthless group who will stop at killing no one—even the Innocent.
I loved the book and will read The Hit and The Target when time permits.
Baldacci has done a good job of masking the story enough that you don't really know what's going on or who the real bad guys are. With about 100 pages to go I was able to start guessing where things were going. But, like with all action adventure novels it is the unraveling of the plot that makes it interesting and The Innocent unravels at a furious pace.
There is a little character development but this is not a sentimental novel nor are there political or religious undertones. The reader knows just enough about the characters to care about their fate with out getting bogged down in detail.
This was an exciting book with the perfect mix of character development, action and romance.
Will Robie may have just made the first — and last — mistake of his career.
It begins with a hit gone wrong. Robie refuses to kill his target, and then becomes a target himself. His protection of a teenage girl, who is a run-away from a foster home and whose parents have been murdered are linked to the murder of several people. With the assistance of a DCIS detective, whose life is also at risk through association, they not only try to make some sense of the evidence, but also protect the life of the girl.
