Product Description

Product Description

Kids walk into schools full of wonder and questions. How you, as an educator, respond to students’ natural curiosity can help further their own exploration and shape the way they learn today and in the future.

The traditional system of education requires students to hold their questions and compliantly stick to the scheduled curriculum. But our job as educators is to provide new and better opportunities for our students. It’s time to recognize that compliance doesn’t foster innovation, encourage critical thinking, or inspire creativity—and those are the skills our students need to succeed.

In THE INNOVATOR'S MINDSET, George Couros encourages teachers and administrators to empower their learners to wonder, to explore—and to become forward-thinking leaders.

If we want innovative students, we need innovative educators. In other words, innovation begins with you. Ultimately, innovation is not about a skill set but about mindset.

• You are a superintendent, district administrator, or principal who wants to empower your staff to create a culture of innovation.
• You are a school leader—at any level—and want help students and educators become their personal best.
• You are a teacher who wants to create relevant learning experiences and help students develop the skills they need to be successful.

THE INNOVATOR'S MINDSET includes practical suggestions for unleashing your students’ and teachers’ talent. You’ll also read encouraging accounts of leaders and learners who are innovating “inside the box.”

You'll be inspired to:
• Connect with other innovative educators
• Support teachers and leaders as learners
• Tap into the strengths of your learning community
• Create ongoing opportunities for innovation
• Seek more effective methods for measuring progress
• And, most importantly, embrace change and use it to do something amazing

I have been meaning to write a review of Innovator's Mindset by George Couros for some time now. If you haven't picked up this book yet, don't wait another minute! I have read the book twice now and continually refer to the ideas in it in my work. One of the best learning experiences I've had was to co-lead a book club with a few outstanding Ontario leaders based on this book. The Innovator's Mindset will have you earmarking pages, nodding in agreement, while challenging your thinking at the same time. What makes this book so special is the conversational style which George uses to weave his ideas with practical suggestions. George states explicilty that he hopes his book will start conversations and that is exactly what it does! While I agreed more with the ideas in the book than disagreed, I think that when you use this text for a whole-school, department, or District-wide book club, it will help others move their thinking and embrace innovation more readily. I saw it happen during our own OSSEMOOC book club where we experimented with online discussions through Google Hangouts, Twitter, Blogs, and Voxer. We used the discussion questions and the additional resources George provides on Facebook to complement the book--together these make it timeless. I am looking forward to the TeachOntario book club in collaboration with #BITReads2016 beginning July 1st and I am hoping to begin a face to face one at my new school some time soon. This book will help you (as it has helped me) to move towards more participatory and innovative practices, and unlike other professional learning books which are difficult to get through, I really enjoyed reading this! I highly recommend Innovator's Mindset to anyone who is looking to be a better, more innovative educator and I doubly recommend it as the basis for a book club.

I’ve been a regular reader of George's blog for quite some time. George is a prolific writer who pulls readers in with an incredible balance of support, inspiration, and challenge. His book is a tidy and succinct collection of some of his best posts, but goes beyond to weave large themes together. You can literally open up any page and start reading a get something profound from this book. It is a well constructed, thoughtful, and challenging book that provides current and relevant resources on topics that anyone interested in innovation in education will enjoy.

I purchased this book for all 20 of our middle school group of Principals and Vice-Principals, and several of them have read it twice. George’s language on empowering lead learners, culture of innovation, and innovator's mindset have been infused into our schools in various ways. I would strongly recommend this read for anyone who is looking for solutions on how we can empower students for their own learning in schools.

Thank you for this book George. It is both supporting and pushing us in the direction we all want to go in education, and that is to do what is best for kids.

I have been following George Couros' blog for several years and was very excited when the book was first released last fall. In my role as a technology coach, innovation is a word I hear on a daily basis but also a term I feel can be easily misunderstood. It seems everyone has a slightly different definition for innovation. In the Innovator's Mindset George Couros not only provides a definition of innovation that I think many educators can see themselves in, but he continues to challenge educators at all levels (classroom, system, administration) to embody the innovator's mindset, recognize the power of relationships, foster a community of innovators and recognize our barriers. The 4 parts and guiding questions at the end of each chapter made it the perfect fit for our OSSEMOOC bookclub this winter. Connecting with the #innovatorsmindset hashtag on Twitter or the Facebook Page allow the conversations to extend even further.

For the past year thanks to the words of George Couros through the Innovator’s Mindset, I have started to look at teaching and learning in a new light - “Innovation”. George says that the "Innovator's Mindset is that belief that abilities, intelligence and talents are developed leading to the creation of better ideas and as a teacher I can see the impact of this in the classroom." As we work and play in a world where technology is part of everyday life, it is the questions, and passions that both students and teachers put into their work that build relationships both within the walls of the classroom, and beyond. There is not one right or wrong way of operating in this mindset. It is about creating change and building relationships that foster growth and community within the educational system.
I would strongly encourage you read this book, it is something that should be in your professional library. It will either change how you view your student’s, school or yourself, or it will validate the new and innovative practices you are already building into your daily classroom routine. Once you get the book join the conversation on Twitter (if you so choose) by following the #InnovatorsMindset and start discussing how this particular mindset will change the face of education.
