Nick has been fantastically involved throughout the production of this CD, so that it has become something far more than simply an author reading his work. For once we can genuinely say this illustrated audiobook comes complete with bells and whistles not to mention some Arctic winds, Venetian canals, telephones, aeroplanes and a squealing pig or two!

To hear the voice of Nick Mason as he meticulously and oftentimes hilariously chronicles the long strange trip that is the ever enigmatic Pink Floyd is truly a wondrous thrill for this die-hard Floydiac. I would highly recommend this audiobook to anyone who may be interested in learning what exactly is this thing called Pink Floyd. Nick Mason has taken upon himself the task of being the band historian, and he delivers a very entertaining and enlightening good fun read. (or in this case, listen). The audiobook version comes with 3 CDs in a high quality hardcover book. There is also a short written introduction with some interesting band pictures as well. I believe these are a limited and hard to find run, so grab one while they are still available. Well worth it.

For Pink Floyd fans this is a must. Nick Mason sounds like a very good person with a great sense of humour. And like all of us still hoping there will be one more gig before leaving for the sky.

Kindle version isn’t the 2017 edition
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 6, 2017Verified Purchase
This is a brilliant book and Nick’s style I found very witty and engaging - if certainly sometimes rather quintessentially droll. But what do you expect from an English gentleman!
However do not buy the kindle version expecting it to be the updated 2017 edition as described. It isn’t and I’m rather annoyed about it.
I have a physical copy of the book which came out in 2009 but I wanted to know what Nick had to say about The Endless River and the superb Their Mortal Remains exhibition. So I thought I’d grab to kindle version and have a catch up on recent Floyd history. So I’m extremely annoyed that my £8.99 kindle version is no different from the physical 2009 edition I already have.
Amazon, sort out the description on the kindle version page please.
Tl:dr - the kindle version is of an old edition of the book and not the 2017 edition as described in the product description. Be warned.

Pleasant, but lacks any depth
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 24, 2017Verified Purchase
I feel a bit mean awarding this book only 3 starts, but as much as it provides a dignified account of the band's well documented difficult history, it also lacks warmth and insight and feels at times as if it has been written by committee. By so obviously setting out not to offend anyone, Nick Mason comes across as terribly nice, but petrified to make a comment or share an anecdote about Messrs Gilmour and Waters. Indeed the two of them were asked to vet the book and no doubt it would have been a more interesting read prior to this process. At times the prose leans heavily towards the technical, explaining in great detail the recording process, use of instruments etc., which whilst fascinating to some, will leave others cold. I'd have liked more about the motivation and background of the members and how they maintained a fresh, creative approach to their craft. There is an obvious need for either Roger or David to talk, and in his wife David has the perfect biographer!

Fact-filled and informative

The book describes the formation of the band, the early work and the split with Syd, in a very readable style. The period between the 'Saucerful of Secrets' and 'The Dark Side of the Moon' albums, as the group becomes a supergroup, rather comes across as a list of people who worked with them, on the tours and on the albums, with precious little about the feelings within the group, so it becomes harder to follow. When the tensions within the group start to erupt, with the album 'The Wall', the story switches its focus back to members of the group and it becomes more readable again. I enjoyed reading the last chapters of the book and it's definitely worth sticking with it to the end.

I'm bound to read anything relating to Pink Floyd, one of the very few bands whose back catalog can rival the Beatles. But I've yet to read a book by a band member of ANY band which was really satisfying. One particular example being the Beatles Anthology which was more sanitized than the Royal Family's Christmas message. And if you wanted a book on the Rolling Stones would Charlie Watts be the man for the job?
Unlike Mick Fleetwood's book this does avoid the personal accounts of various divorces, and I'm happy about that. (Apparently the text went through a screening process with band members first). But it fails to give us much insight about the creative processes behind the music. About 40% into my Kindle I realized I was reading ever more details about studio, stage a set specifications, constructions, and road crews, etc.
Three stars: "It's alright", but Mark Blake's "Pigs Might Fly" remains first choice so far for a book about Pink Floyd.

An excellent, very readable account of this great band. I have read other accounts that have bored the pants of me, this however kept me engrossed as it is told with some humour and not heavy going. It is like being plugged into Nick Masons' memory, every little personal recollection and detail from way back when is recorded which makes this so much more enjoyable. A must read for any fan.
