I’m a little torn about this one…

I like it quite a bit, really. The premise sounded interesting. Gabriella was with one man until things started to change, then she met another man…

The opening immediately makes you wonder what the heck is going on. Shortly after, you can tell there’s definitely more there than meets the eye. It gets more interesting as Rafe is introduced, making you wonder some more what his angle is.

I enjoyed how everything is being laid out. The mystery is slowly opening up. It’s making me question where everyone fits in. I wonder how those 2 men fit into the puzzle, and why they’re doing the things they’re doing. For sure, I’m hooked in with the suspense and mystery I’ve been given a glimpse of so far.

Where I struggled is Gabriella/Brie. I am not able to fully connect with her somehow. I don’t appreciate what appear to be her co-dependent thoughts. Her past may have contributed to that, and granted, there really are women like her, but unfortunately, I’m not getting how her identity seems to be attached to which ever man is in her life. I wish she can come to those conclusions about herself without a man’s aid. That’s what it felt like to me the whole time. I didn’t agree with most of her decisions/actions. But interestingly enough, if not for her unintelligent actions, she wouldn’t have been in the situation she’s in, and where would have the story gone then?

Adrian and Rafe are 2 interesting fellas. Obviously, one is meant to be the hero. Regardless of who the hero is, given how I like a dark read every now and then, I’m just as curious about the one not meant to be a hero, because I found, when done right, those men are the ones who make you question your boundaries.

Whoa... I wasn't expecting a cliffhanger! I thought this was going to be a stand alone! Ouch, that hurt! Note to self, going in blind is dangerous!

I devoured this book in one day! I really liked the suspense set up by the prologue. Great start! And the book kept me gripped until the very end.

I have to admit didn't like Adrian from the start, he felt really fake to me. And HELLO... MorningStar is another name for the Devil... Can you say RED FLAG! I didn't trust him and I really didn't like the way he treated Brie. Honestly I wanted to throat punch the jerk!

Enter Rafe... The mysterious contractor. I'm not a huge fan of love triangles but this one was written really well. So well I had a hard time deciding who was the right or wrong choice. I liked Rafe, he had some darkness and secrets but he was kind and protective and sweet to Brie.

Brie wasn't as strong as I had hoped her to be. She was broken and so very lonely that I feel like she was an easy target. A few sweet words and she was head over heals in love. With her being completely alone in the world she was just so sad. I am hoping as the series progresses she finds her strength and we see her kicking some butt!

There is so much mystery & suspense you just don't know anything until the bitter end. It kept be hooked & on the edge of my seat.

Wow this book grabbed me right from the start! I loved how Brie was able to be strong enough to move on and Rafe is treating her like she should be treated. I am going to start the next one right away!

**I received an ARC for an honest review.**

This book has a great premise and is a bit mysterious and suspenseful, but I just did not really connect with the characters or the story until the end.

I am not sure how I feel about Brie and what she is going through. I feel for her and all that she has been through I just feel like there is too much mystery that is surrounded her and her relationship with Adrian and there is not enough light shed on it by the end of this book. I was left wanting more answers and not really in a good way. During this book I hated Adrian and was suspicious of him right from the start of their relationship, but I feel like there should have been more revealed about him. Brie should have more answers and I want and need more answers.

Rafe. I like his protective nature over Brie, but I missed their connection. It just seemed he walks into her home and then BAM, things are now so much different. I just didn't feel their beginning spark, it seemed like it came from nowhere. I wanted it to be played on more and it seemed like the majority of this book did not reveal anything that satisfied my curiosity. I would have liked more in Rafe's POV also just to connect with his character a bit more. I felt like there was a gap in completely connecting with him.

I still don't know who Rafe is or where he came from and why is he all of sudden in Brie's life. I don't anything more about Adrian other than he did show some remorse and seemed to be conflicted on what has happened, but still no solid answers. I am so confused for Brie because we meet her in the same fashion as we finish this book and she is still completely clueless. The only thing that seemed to be remedied in this book is Brie's decision to leave Adrian and move on with her life and even that did not play out like I thought.

The ending of this book and the sneak peek into Escalation is what will have me continuing this story. I really enjoyed the last 10% of this book and I will definitely continue this series to find out how it goes.

HASH(0xa0db1570) out of 5 stars Unfortunately disappointing. April 24 2015

I'm a huge Tessa Teevan fan so I was surprised and disappointed to find that I don't know if I really liked this book. First, there is a cliffhanger which I really try to avoid. The book literally began and ended on the same scene but it was in between the beginning and the end that had me disappointed. I just couldn't seem to get into the characters or understand their motivations. I actually ended up skipping and skimming through pages here and there to get to the next scene hoping the story would move along.

Gabriella loses her parents and after shutting out friends and family she meets Adrian and instantly falls for him. What I didn't get is that it doesn't seem like she knows anything about him. After some time together she knows he's cheating on her and attempts to leave him. She gets a bit scared when he reminds her how isolated she is and how much control he has over her. Then he leaves for a month and she just stays put anyway. During this time she is supposed to be overseeing a construction project and meets Rafe, the head contractor. She falls for Rafe and he for her all the while knowing that Adrian supposedly knows everything she is doing. When she finally does move out Rafe tells her not to go back to the mansion for any reason but of course she does. She runs into Adrian and he absconds with her. There is also some mystery surrounding Rafe and I'm not sure if he's going to be a good guy or a bad guy or a bad guy trying to do a good thing. I feel like Gabriella went from the frying pan into the fire and didn't learn a darn thing. Overall this book left me feeling dissatisfied and not because of the cliffhanger but because it seems like there wasn't much a story just killing time between the beginning and the end which as I said before was the same scene.

I will probably get the sequel just to find out what the rest of the story is but I sure hope the story actually moves along instead of feeling like its spinning its wheels in place.

HASH(0xa0db184c) out of 5 stars Kept me on the edge of my seat! April 20 2015

5 Rafe Stars

I’m going to start this review by saying that this is unlike any of the previous books written by Tessa Teevan. From sweet and funny to charming and sexy and now, suspenseful and intriguing, Instigation is a sure book that will leave you hanging on to every word that Tessa Teevan writes.

Gabriella “Brie” Latham is a young woman who has no one in her life. Being an only child didn’t help especially with her parents passing away. She’s left alone and wandering through her life. Brie, 22 years old, fresh out of college, looking for a job, and uprooted from her hometown an hour outside of Chicago to Philadelphia. I couldn’t imagine myself being in her shoes and how she was portrayed made my heart ache. Even in just the first pages, I can already feel how lonely she might be and how much she is struggling.

But that was until she met the alluring Adrian Morningstar.

Adrian Morningstar is a knight in shining armour. An answered prayer. A prince charming. While Gabriella was spending her time on her computer in a coffeeshop, looking for a job, in comes Adrian who helps Gabriella with her coffee. He was a prince charming, alright. He charmed the hell out of the unsuspecting young woman. Good-looking and seductive, how is that not going to attract beautiful and lonesome? Adrian used all of his charms to his advantage. It worked. It worked for me as well, if that counts! He made me smile and swoon until I wasn’t anymore. There are secrets and deception. Does he know from the start who Gabriella is? Why did he approach her that day at the coffeeshop? What are his plans for her? And why now?

“My mind reels, wondering if everything between us has been a lie. It couldn’t be, could it?”

After years of being with Adrian, the earlier days a whirlwind of romance and then when that whirlwind slowed down it became mostly of Brie conforming to what Adrian wants her to be. She stopped working as a receptionist and became Adrian’s assistant, they live together, Adrian provides for her. It’s safe to say that everything she has, Adrian gave her. Remember when I mentioned earlier that even from the start, her loneliness is palpable? That is the reason I can sympathise with her and her decisions. It’s understandable. It may not be how you or I will go about life but it worked for her at the beginning. I wanted to be her friend, someone she can at least talk to and someone who can give her advice or some friendly reminders. She didn’t have that and Adrian was there to be her person.

When the sparks started to dwindle and Brie started to realise things haven’t been the way it is for a while now. Something has changed and now she wants out. But how can she leave? Where will she go? What will she do? She has nothing. She has no one. She has nowhere else to go. And I wanted to just drag her out of Adrian's house already! It pains me how much she wants to get out already but can't because of Adrian.

Not until Rafe literally popped in her life.

Unexpectedly.

Yet a welcome distraction

… and a possible escape.

“Never again will I fall for a pretty face. Or well, in this case, a ruggedly handsome one.”

Rafe slightly creeped me out at first. No, really. It may be hot but that first meeting was awkward. But unlike with Adrian who made me smile at first and made me want to punch him eventually, Rafe creeped me out but made me smiling as the book progresses. He’s a mysterious guy with his own agenda but even with that, he genuinely cares for Brie. He wanted to take care of her, help her, and not just by making her dependent on him like what I felt Adrian did but by making sure she can stand with her own two feet and providing her support and even friendship. I loved him for that!

Rafe is such a sweetheart. I will always think of him fondly as that creep from the start but he's the creep who made me giddy and feel hopeful for Brie. Although, Tessa did a turn and got me thinking who the heck Rafe really is.

Tessa Teevan managed to bring out all these contradicting emotions from me with these 3 characters and their story! I didn’t know who to root for, who to dislike, whether I should be happy about that one thing or be frustrated because of the other. And these emotions? The author pulled it off. It left me on the edge of my seat and thinking “What the hell is going on in here?!” and Adrian? I’m thinking Tessa has a soft spot for making not-likeable characters a lovable one (*ehem* Branson Wellington *ehem*). I think Adrian has something to tell us and I'm waiting to find out what it is!
