Amazon.ca Product Description
The Intel Core 2 Quad processor blows through processor-intensive tasks in demanding multitasking environments and makes the most of highly threaded applications. Whether you`re creating multimedia, annihilating your gaming enemies, or running compute-intensive applications at one time, new quad-core processing will change the way you do everything. Pioneer the new world of quad-core and unleash the power of multithreading.
From the Manufacturer
The Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550S brings four computing cores running at 2.83 GHz in a single processor for the ultimate in efficiency and performance. It features 12 MB of L2 cache and a 1333 MHz front side bus, and it uses the LGA775 socket for wide compatibility with motherboards. The processor features Intel's 45nm architecture and delivers multimedia experiences with greater speed and responsiveness. With the Q9550S, demanding users can now accomplish more in less time.
With four cores, you'll experience outstanding performance and better efficiency.
The Core 2 Quad Q9550S lets you enjoy a smooth and high-quality multimedia experience.
Intel's Intelligent Power Capability ensures optimal energy efficiency.
Starting with Intel's revolutionary new high-efficiency, high-performance 45nm processor technology, Intel engineers decided to go one step farther in the performance department. By including 12 MB of shared L2 cache and a front side bus speed of 1333 MHz, the Q9550S processor pushes the technological innovation envelope farther than ever before.
For users, this means the latest and most advanced software applications can open and run faster with superior responsiveness. When used with the latest multimedia software and next-generation games, dropped frames, long waiting times, and stuttering performance are things of the past.
New Technologies Provide Higher Performance and Better Energy Efficiency
By using hafnium, a naturally occurring element, Intel engineers were able to shrink the size of new Intel processors and pack more computing technology into less space. The processor also features Intel's Intelligent Power Capability, which allows it to turn off parts of itself when it isn't in use. The result is improved performance with less energy wastage and a reduction of heat and noise.
Intel has packed the Core 2 Quad Q9550S with cutting-edge technologies for better performance. Wide Dynamic Execution allows the processor to do more tasks simultaneously by enabling the delivery of more instructions per clock cycle. Intel's Advanced Smart Cache technology improves performance by physically placing data closer to the processing cores. And Smart Memory Access, which increases available data bandwidth, means you'll experience less slowdown while multi-tasking, so you can get more done.
Multimedia Acceleration for Faster Content Creation
If you are editing HD video, manipulating professional-grade photos, or working with music, the Q9550S will let your computer keep up with your imagination. The processor features Intel's Advanced Digital Media Boost for accelerating performance of a wide range of applications including video, gaming, speech and image, and photo processing among others. Additionally, Intel's HD Boost technology further improves the performance of SSE4-optimized applications, such as video editing and encoding in high definition.
Fewer Multi-tasking Slowdowns
With four processing cores, you'll be able to juggle more projects and more applications without experiencing the slowdown that you typically see with traditional single-core processors. Processing tasks are split up and distributed to the four different cores so the Q9550S doesn't get bogged down.
Get a Leg Up on the Latest Games
Next-generation gaming is more than just pretty environments and smooth motion. Behind the incredible visual realism of waterfalls or the unlucky ricochet of a bullet are intense, high-speed calculations of asset streaming, terrain generation, 3D rendering, and physics effects. When running select next-generation games, each of the cores in the Q9550S can be dedicated to each of these individual processes, resulting in smoother, more lifelike graphics and further blurring the line between virtual and reality.
The Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550S is backed by a three-year warranty.

Out the box its at 2.8 so which is more than enough to run pretty much anything faster than any Dual core, yes even the E8400 4Ghz.
The Core is easily overclockable to 3.5Ghz at which point it becomes a whole new level of awesomeness, it'll handle any game like Crysis and run them with no problems or hiccups.
I use my processor mainly for console emulation, to put things into perspective i was running a 4Ghz E8400 and the Q9 clocks out 60fps solid where the E8400 would clock 40-55 unstable.
Testing this versus the i7, the gains from the i7 are negligable as they clock the same times with any programs on the market right now, so dont bother going i7 when till much much later.
Q9 is the processor for you.
I can report that the package was intact and the product works exceptionally.
I got mine to replace an E8600 C2D I had overclocked at 4ghz. With this quad overclocked to 4ghz it's a nice new level. Paid $200 at the time which is a fairer price. I went from C2D/4gb to C2Quad/8gb for not too much dough and won't need a new PC for another few years.
Took a bit of tweaking to get stable 4ghz 1.38v overclock (Gigabyte EP45-UD3P and 8gb G.Skill ddr2 1066). Using Noctua NH-U12P cooler. Very happy now that I have it dialed in. System is quiet and fast.
Runs great, stays below 60C. 8800GT screams. No CPU bottleneck here. MW2 runs smooth at 1900x1080 maxed out graphics. I sold my GTX280 and don't really miss it, now that I have this cpu to push the 8800GT.
buy an aftermarket cooler if you overclock beyond 3.4ghz (which is easy at stock voltages).
Most people won't need to overclock though.
Make sure your motherboard is good with the 45nm CPU's. Just because it's socket 775 doesn't mean it will work.
If I were doing a new budget build I'd probably choose the i5-750 or a Phenom X4 on AM3 platform.
