Product Description

“Although it does not reveal a prescriptive path for interdisciplinary work, for our group, this volume served as a valuable catalyst for thinking about interdisciplinary research. We look forward to future conversations that build on Öberg’s examples of how to navigate problem-oriented, interdisciplinary research.”  (The Quarterly Review of Biology, 1 September 2012)

“Professor Öberg’s book explains the benefits of interdisciplinary studies, how to overcome the challenges, and lays the foundation from which good interdisciplinary research can be done. Furthermore, the information is applicable to research in general, not just that attempting to cross disciplines – it should be read by all people contemplating embarking upon a research project.” Professor Jacqueline S Rowarth, Massey University

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent primer for would-be masters of interdisciplinary environmental studies Feb. 15 2012
By Steve Benner - Published on
Format: Paperback
It can be a big step from undergraduate study to conducting original research at Masters level or above. When the focus of that research extends beyond a single discipline and has to connect the research paradigms of several potentially disparate subject disciplines, bridging any divides between those paradigms in a valid and academically acceptable way, the pitfalls can be enormous. "Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies, a primer" by Gunilla Öberg provides excellent guidance through the difficulties that have to be faced and overcome when undertaking interdisciplinary work, providing a carefully constructed set of self-searching questions and analytical check points that will help students and other researchers who are tackling interdisciplinary study for the first time to become productive as quickly as possible. Although fairly short (150 pages) the book is densely packed and should be required reading for anyone undertaking research-level environmental studies for the first time. Even established researchers in the field would do well to read the book as it contains many insights into why many seemingly valuable and worthwhile interdisciplinary undertakings fail miserably even before they have begun.
