Brooke is Dwayne's best friend, has been since kindergarten. Dwayne has wanted more from Brooke for for just as long, but he stayed back, watched as she fell in love, got married, had a child, and stood by her when that marriage fell apart. So when Brooke's 17year old daughter, Hailey goes missing, Dwayne steps up, both as Brooke's best freind, and as a Detective in the Nyack police deptartment, trying to shut down a drug ring at Hailey's school. Things take a turn for the worst when they discover just what and who Hailey has got mixed up in. But through it all, Dwayne is right there, by Brooke's side. Something changes along the way, and Dwayne makes it known what he wants, WHO he wants. Will Brooke give in, or will she hold Dwayne's past against him?
This is book two in the series, the Empire Blue Series, and I have not read book one, Intimate Danger. This will go on my wish list though. I did not feel I missed out on anything, but just because I wanna read it!
BECAUSE I LOVED THIS!
The right amount of history, both for Dwayne and Brooke. The right amount of now. The right amount of danger, of passion, of being kept on your toes, of falling in love, falling out, and of making up again. We get to hear from both Brooke and Dwayne, but also Hailey, as she spirals downwards, and we hear from Luke, Dwayne's younger brother, as he attempts to save Hailey, all the time fighting with himself. These Gonzales boys are amazing! They pull together when one of their own is threatened, and lets be honest here, Brooke, and by extension, Hailey, is one of their own. As Hailey puts it, Brooke and Dwayne have been pussy-fotting it around each other for years!
Some difficult topics dealt with here, and some readers may find that they have triggers. Forced drug addiction, drug dealing, human trafficking and child prostitution are all dealt with here. Extremely wel, extremely sensitively and all very, very well written.
I see *at least* two more stories branching off this one. Hailey and Luke have something to say, I'm sure and when they do, that's gonna be amazing, but equally, I fear, heartbreaking for them both. And another brother, Mike. What happened to him before he called Dwayne, and its after effects need a book too, I reckon. I'm following this series to see who is next!
This is the first book of D.C.Stone's I've read, I hope it won't be the last. Her style of writing, her way with words, her storylines are all excellent, and fabulous, and I want to read more.
