Product Description

Ip Man is an award winning adaptation based on the life of Ip Man (Donnie Yen), the grandmaster of Wing Chun and later teacher and mentor to widely influential and legendary martial artist, Bruce Lee. Ip Man is set in the 1930s in Foshan, a hub of southern Chinese martial arts just as the Second Sino-Japan war breaks out. During the war, China is nearly ripped to pieces by racial hatred, nationalistic strife and warfare. Ip Man rose like a phoenix above these ashes as he defied an empire bringing hope to China. Winner of Best Picture and Actor, Ip Man ranks as one of the best martial arts movies of all time!

One of the most astonishing displays of martial arts action on film in recent years, Wilson Yip's Ip Man chronicles the life of the eponymous Wing Chun master (Donnie Yen), who would later become instructor and mentor to Bruce Lee. Fans of Ronny Yu's Fearless, with Jet Li, will notice several similarities between the biopics--like Li's Huo Yuanjia, Ip Man is a tireless instructor whose life, largely consisting of training and jaw-dropping spar sessions with any and all, is thrown into chaos with the arrival of Japanese military forces in 1937. He soon draws the interest of the commanding Japanese colonel (Hiroyuki Ikeuchi), who exploits the starving locals by forcing them against his trainees for bags of rice. Ip must then pit his extraordinary Wing Chun against the colonel's karate for his own dignity, as well as the soul of his people.

Were Yip's film simply a series of set pieces featuring Yen's incredible fighting skills, Ip Man would rank among the best martial arts films of the past three decades; the fight choreography, by Hong Kong legend Sammo Hung and Tony Leung Siu-hung (with consultation by Ip's own son, Ip Chun), offers the same sort of eye-popping, rewind-required fist and footwork that Ip's disciple, Bruce Lee, inspired in the '70s, and Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and Tony Jaa displayed in subsequent years; a battle between Ip and 10 black belts, in particular, requires multiple views to absorb the speed and deftness on display. But Ip Man also succeeds as a historical drama inspired by the harsh realities of the Japanese occupation of mainland China, as well as an acting showcase for Yen, who embodies Ip's formidable physical and emotional strengths.. --Paul Gaita

“What a great First installment of the movie that’s showing the real life Ip man,who thought “Bruce Lee”?
everything he knew back then, and to this day ,still lives in people minds I’m sure of his fighting skills,
“Donnie Yen”I have to say gives a good performance as Ip Man, even though he looked too serious to me,
Set in Fo Shan,China during the Sino-Japanese War, ip man vividly brings to life the brutality of the infamous
Japanese occupation, when these proud men, were forced to fight to the death for a precious bag of rice,
but Ip man, who’s fighting skills are know all over China rises to the challenge,
Runtime 107 Minutes (Feature)+ 23 Minutes (Extras).

Widescreen.I thought it was the black bars at top and bottom, this is not.

If you are a fan of Bruce Lee, then you must see this film. If you are a fan for martial arts, then you definitely must see it as well. This is definitely one of the best kung fu movies to hit the theater in years!! The action in the movie is awesome, the fighting is very realistic and showcases the fighting method of Wing Chun and it's superior combat system.

The story of Ip Man, though based on the historical person of Ip Man, it's storyline is not found in history, it is at best a historical fiction. However, this does not take away from the storyline and Donnie Yen portrays the character very well. There is a very strong nationalism undertone to the story about the Chinese uniting against the Japanese invaders in the era of WWII. This film shows how one man, Ip Man fought to inspire the Chinese people to fight against the Japanese. The movie features many great fight scenes all were extremely memorable.

This is definitely a great film worth every penny and the extras on the 2-Disc collection gives you a better insight in how the movie was made!! I own the DVD and Blue-Ray of this film.

5 STARS!!

This title remains my overall favorite martial arts film of all time.

It has heart; it has great acting; the plot, central narrative and character exposition is well-done.

Donnie Yen and co-starring actors pull off such an outstanding performance that, by the time that the 3rd act of the film begins, I was honestly holding back tears while also fuming at the atrocities committed by the film's main antagonist and his second in command (both of whom were brilliant in their roles).

9.5 / 10 - If you're a fan of the genre, this film is a no-brainer.

P.S. - Be sure to pick up part 2 and 3 on Blu-ray (part 3 actually won't be available until spring 2016 - it's currently playing in theaters as of January 06, 2016).

I have seen all of the classics. Enter the Dragon, Hero, Fearless, Crouching Tiger, Shaolin Master Killer, 5 Deadly Venoms etc. etc. etc. This movie is just on a whole different level. Reasons why: 1) Based on a true story. 2) Minimal wire work 3) It's political 4) Engaging characters who you actually care about 5) Great story that has a purpose when fighting.

If you prefer fairy tale martial arts movies where they fly a lot, then this movie might not be for you. But if you like stand up fighting that is "mostly" based on reality. This movie is the one to see. I can't recommend this movie enough. I saw it four times in five days when I finally got a copy. Simply amazing.

When I saw it for the first time I knew I had to buy it.

Ip Man is amost carbon copy of how I am taught. Both a great introduction to and motivator to engage in Wing Chun. It is not flashy but IT WORKS!!!

There are a few "movie fu" (Sifu-ism) moments in it but nothing that annoys :)

One of the best recent kung-fu movies. Superb fighting scenes with kung-fu practitioner Donnie Yen. Very detailed blu-ray image. See also: "Ip Man 2", with the same actors. I read rumors about an upcoming "Ip Man 3", also with Donnie Yen. I look forward to it!

Amazing film. I enjoyed every minute of it. The story in the movie is amazing...you just want to watch it over and over again because it's a true story.
Knowing that the Ip Man was the real guy who trained Bruce Lee in real life just surprises you as you watch the film.

This movie is excellent, i would suggest it for people who are fans of kung fu for sure. it adequately highlights Ip Man's life and his career in martial arts. The premise of the movie is not to simple and not to convoluted.
