The Island [Blu-ray]

When you add up all the best things about The Island, you might just conclude that there's hope yet for Hollywood's most critically reviled hit-maker, Michael Bay. Recruited by Steven Spielberg to direct this lavish and often breathtaking sci-fi action thriller, Bay rises to the occasion with an ambitious production that is, by his standards (and compared to Bay's earlier hits like The Rock and Armageddon), surprisingly intelligent as it explores the repercussions of cloning in a sealed-off society where humans are cultivated for spare parts, surrogate parenthood, and full-body replacements for wealthy clientele. But when two of the clones (Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johanssen) begin to question their fate and the motives of their keepers, they escape into the real world and The Island becomes just another Michael Bay action extravaganza, albeit an impressively exciting one. With elaborate chase scenes and a high-tech feast of CGI to dazzle the eye, The Island recycles much of the plot from 1979's Clonus while borrowing elements from Logan's Run, Gattaca and Minority Report, and while it's not as smartly conceived as those earlier films, there's no denying that, in many ways, it's Bay's best film to date. --Jeff Shannon --This text refers to the DVD edition.

The Island was coasting along at what I thought was an easy 4 stars until the disastrous ill-fitting ending. The movie spends all this time building to the grand finale and after a lot of intense action in the second half, a Disney-type happy ending complete with sappy music appears out of nowhere. Huh?!?! Oh, I get it. The villain is dead, the evil corporation is finished, the protagonists survive complete mayhem without a scratch and all the people are free!. YAY! And it only took about 10 minutes to do all that! Whew! What a relief! And who doesn't like sappy music in their futuristic dystopian sci-fis, right?

The Island is good for about 110 minutes, a bit fishy for the next 10 and bloody awful at the finish.

This movie is a great movie, probably the best from Michael Bay. The actors are very nice and there's a great chemistry between them. I would have given this movie 5 stars but you will see why I didn't.
The canadian version of the DVD has english and french soundtrack. On the back of the dvd, it is clearly written English 5.1 and French 5.1. Though, when you start the dvd and get to the setup screen, you get English 2.0 and French 5.1. At first, I thought it was a mistake on the setup screen but when actually playing it, it's really in English 2.0... Who the hell decided that the ORIGINAL english soundtrack would be in 2.0 ??? That was my biggest disappointment ever as I was waiting impatiently for this dvd since the theater release of this movie..
So if you don't have a 5.1 theater system, disregard this, but if you do, buy at your own risks.

this is for the bluray, as most of the other reviews on this page seem to be for the prior dvd release.

the english dts-HD master audio track is a loud crunching affair ..... lots of fun if you're in the mood for a full bombastic experience.

the image looks great.

i have no complaints regarding the technical aspects of this disc

what i was rather shocked at, and pleasantly surprised by, was the actual story and the world that that story takes place in. (thanks to all the previous reviewers who stated this point previously) i am here to confirm that ....

if you like films like:

logan's run
children of men
blade runner
soylent green
code 46
minority report

you like gratuitous action and the sound of timpani drums ...

you will definitely enjoy this film.

it's slick but done well .... take it for what it is ... a summer popcorn action flick with a relevant thought provoking story. if you judge it on that basis, you can't go wrong.

The reason I loved this movie so much is because I felt as though there was a hidden meaning that the film makers were trying to reveal. I don't know if it was intentional, but in many, many ways, I saw a great deal of what I define society to be; ....

The population living in a secretly destructful world of UTOPIA (the facility in the movie, our "perfect" world in real life). The only thing that drives these people is the PURPOSE that is GIVEN to them through deception (the "ISLAND" lottery in the movie, earthly pleasures in real life). When one peron finally discovers the truth, the population either closes their ears or claim he is insane (what people unfortunately and blindly call a "conspiracy theorist" in real life), and the leaders that already know the truth, try to shut him up or kill him off (I don't believe an explanation is needed for these leaders, the answer is clear, especially today). Until people WAKE UP, they will all remain imprisoned in a life full of deception. We see these people wake up to the truth at the end of the movie, and that is when they ***SPOILER*** escape from the facility, into the real world where they've never been, and put an end to their tyrant leader.

I hope people watching this movie don't just see it as a good action film, but also discover the message that everyone should be hearing.

Okay, maybe a wee bit exaggerated, heh. But considering how much critics panned and otherwise tore apart this movie when it was in theaters, I really quite enjoyed the film more than I expected. Lots of great action sequences, cool visual effects and an interesting take on a future society.
Ewan McGregor was good in his dual role as Lincoln, and Scarlett Johanssen illuminated the screen as Jordan. And the supporting cast shone as well, which included Sean Bean, Steve Buscemi, Ethan Phillips, Djimon Hounsou and Michael Clarke Duncan.
Like many others, I was perplexed by the bizarre sound issue on the DVD -- the English audio track is only in Dolby 2.0, and it's the French that gets the 5.1 treatment! Usually it's the other way around. I've never seen that before, even in Canada, and it definitely is a kind of rip-off. If that's a Canada-only issue, then I'll definitely consider dropping by Amazon.COM if I decide to buy the movie.
Otherwise, it's a very enjoyable popcorn film and a great showcase for gorgeous it-girl Johanssen. If there are any other clones of her lying about, send one over!
