About the Author

Gerhard Meier was born in 1917. Spending six months in a sanatorium for tuberculosis made him decide to leave his job at a lamp factory and devote himself exclusively to writing. He produced a steady stream of poetry and fiction thereafter, dying in 2008 at the age of 91.

Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) is considered one of the greatest poets who ever wrote in the German language. His most famous works are Sonnets to Orpheus, The Duino Elegies, Letters to a Young Poet, and The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge. His collected work is comprised of hundreds of other poems, essays, plays, and stories.

HASH(0x9f4f3408) out of 5 stars A Walk With Grandpa Jan. 24 2015
By James W. Fonseca - Published on
Format: Hardcover
Two elderly gentlemen walk through a small Swiss town talking about life. One does almost all the talking and, as you would expect, they mostly talk about the past and not too much about the future, and with a bit of repetition. But they intersperse their comments with reflections on literature and poetry, music and painting (the title is taken from a famous painting on the cover). They both grew up in the area so they compare the current landscape to that of the past. The book is translated from the German and it is short, 100 pages, about the length of an afternoon walk. I saw the main theme as homage to the ways of life in a small Swiss town. Kind of like taking a walk with an erudite Grandpa.
