I bought this to work on a nearly vertical slope, and because Rope Runners have become impossible to find. This was an inexpensive alternative, so I decided to give it a try. I'm using an 11mm rope. This device was very easy to use for decent, which makes sense since this bobbin is actually designed for cave work. However, it's listed as also for ascent, and it just isn't useful for that. It's design makes it almost impossible to ascend and take up the free slack with one hand. The slack can only be taken up while engaging the handle, which takes two hands, and even then it is difficult. So isn't very practical. I would not recommend this device if you need it to ascend as well. Get a Rope Runner.
Also note, these are not actually rated for belay work, due to the high impact stress that can be applied. This is a descender, plain and simple.
Pros: Works fine for descent and locks off well.
