Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit arrives on blu-ray with MPEG-4 AVC 1080p 2.35:1 encode. This terrific transfer has a warm cinematic presence. Contrast is excellent with deep, solid blacks and revealing shadow delineation. The colour palette is richly hued with strong primaries and vibrant highlights that pop with brightness. Colour graduations are perfectly smooth and beautifully textured. Resolution is outstanding, with fine detail evident throughout. Detail is never lost, even in the darkest scenes. Facial features are finely resolved, as well as hair, clothing, and object texture. Fleshtones are perfectly hued, for impressive naturalness. This is a wonderful picture with stunning, reference imagery. (5/5)
The DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1-channel soundtrack is effectively impressive, with a fully active immersive soundfield that envelops throughout, both in terms of low-level ambiance and energized peaks. The track is consistently dynamic, full, wide, and rich, delivering everything from robust musical notes to subtle ambiance with ease and lifelike accuracy. Music is very well spaced and plays with natural, enveloping stage presence. Clarity is strong throughout the range. Action sound effects are impeccably placed and detailed, whether the chaotic sounds of a helicopter before and after coming under fire, gunshots, or car crashes. Even more subtle sound effects, like brass casings falling to the floor after ejection from a suppressed pistol, play with an uncanny lifelike sound. Gently falling rain and rolling thunder, typical big city din, and airport public address announcements all play with a lifelike clarity and precision placement. Dialogue flows evenly and clearly from the center. This is a top-notch, reference-capable soundtrack from Paramount.Read more ›
Ryan's a graduate student working on his Phd. at Oxford when 9/11 inspires him to rush back home so fast he can't even deliver his doctoral dissertation in 'Ultra-Obscure-Economics'. He joins the Marines as a Lieutenant, requests frontline combat, gets shot down in a helicopter and breaks his back in the crash; that doesn't stop him from dragging his two comrades to safety in a super-heroic way. He spends several months in rehab (the heroic kind), triumphs over adversity, and learns how to stumble around, walk, run, then -- later -- fly around like a ninja, all while suffering from back pain... and top it all off by hooking up with the doctor-in-training who taught him to believe in himself by withholding medication and engaging him with spunky banter. He then meets Harper (Kevin Costner), his handler and future mentor, and becomes a 'shadow recruit' for the CIA, which means he'll be an undercover yuppie, a compliance officer for a large brokerage firm, secretly looking for shadowy financial behavior indicative of the next 9/11.
Ten uneventful years go by. He's the best damn compliance officer there is, of course, but he still has time to fix his geeky fake-pal up with women and (surprise!) spot a Russian oligarch propping up the US dollar for nefarious reasons (in an obvious way that should have sent red flags up everywhere).Read more ›
Sorry Tom Clancy, but your characters were bland. Where was their sense of humor? The whole movie was about getting control over computer accounts to save the Treasury Bonds or something. For some reason my adrenaline rush level was low.
Parental Guide: 2 F-bombs to make sure it gets a PG-13 rating. No sex or nudity.
