This might be my favorite comedy of all time. Steve Martin is classic in it and you can watch it over and over again, great replay value!
If you want a good laugh, pick up this awesome movie that will have you laughing all night long. A near perfect comedy movie.

Product description
That wild and crazy guy, Steve Martin, makes his film-starring debut in the wacky comedy hit The Jerk. Steve portrays Navin Johnson, adopted son of a poor black sharecropper family, whose crazy inventions lead him from rags to riches and right back to rags. Along the way, he's smitten with a lady motorcycle racer, survives a series of screwball attacks by a deranged killer, becomes a millionaire by inventing the "Opti-grab" handle for glasses - and shows why he's one of the hottest comic performers in the world.

The script was written (and expanded) from Steve Martin's stand up show.

Disappointed
Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2020Verified Purchase
I thought Steve Martin would have been more "innocent" in his acting at the onset of his career, but he was a big disappointment in this film (as he has been in later films, but not ALL of them). Rough language for me is indicative of a person who tries to present himself (or herself) as more than they really are and try to prove it by the use of profanity as if that's an elevating quality of personhood. To me it shows ignorance. I thought the plot was okay, and I would have rated it higher by one or two stars without all the bad language. You have the right to call me a prude, but even though I learned the language in the military, I still don't like it.

Not one of Steve Martin's better movies
Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2021Verified Purchase
I hadn't seen this one before so I picked it up. I have to say I was NOT impressed with anything. Steve Martin wasn't sure if he was portraying a mentally handicapped person or just a dump person. His acting was all over the board, dull, and the story wasn't there. There were a few scenes and jokes that were funny, but not worth saving in my collection. I'd PASS.

Not funny

This old movie is not funny and at times quite offensive. Could do without the racial remarks and, especially, juggling kittens. That is just cruel. Not worth your money.

Must See Movie!
Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2015Verified Purchase
It may be an older film, but this is by far one of my most favorite movies. It is funny and silly right from the very minute it starts. I've always enjoyed Steve Martin movies because he's a fan favorite - his goofy antics make this movie a must see for everyone.
Basically the movie is a rags to riches story, but it goes on and makes fun of all sorts of stereotypes and prejudices. It's a great reminder to keep on going even when life seems to really suck! It's the kind of movie you want to watch when you're feeling down, or when you just need a laugh. Or to remember how ridiculous your fashion sense was 25 years ago.
