A sweet clean romance.
Cora came out to texas as a mail order bride then gets caugut up in a gun fight. She survives and finds out one of the men killed was her soon to be husband.
With no where to go and she finds the man that warned her to duck is going to where her sister lives and they lost there cook. She gets his partner to dress as boy and say she is there cook.
Jesse is not happy with the arrangement but needs a cook and the job , so he can get his own land so he can marry his childhood sweetheart.
On the way to Kansas feelings grow between Jesses and Cora. Despite how grumpy he acts and unlady like she acts (like his sister).
They get to Kansas and her sister is not home and will not be for a few days, so Cora stays with Jesse's family. His grandma likes Cora and gets her to help finish the Wedding quilt for Jesse, an Irish design. (Cora is Irish).
Cora sister returns early and Cora goes with her.
Jesse finds out Cora father's there to take her gack to England to marry an older rich man.
Will he get her in time and figure out he loves her?

Jessie Atwell is hard-pressed to win the bid for a cattle drive. Unfortunately, his cook has just passed in a gun battle. Without a cook, he’s out of the running. Cora is fresh off the stage from England as a mail-order bride and has walked into a shoot-out in the streets. When the smoke clears, she finds that her groom is deceased. A kind, mature man named Shorty helps her come up with a scheme to get to her sister’s house in Kansas. Disguised as the cook and going by the name of Cookie, Cora is tough and resilient. Jessie keeps his mouth shut to win the bid but traveling with a woman disguised as a man is difficult and unheard of to him. He believes women should be docile and sweet, not rough and tumble like his sister, Kizzie, was. His fiancée is waiting for him to earn the money from this cattle drive and he can’t wait to get this delivery done (both cattle and female) so he can begin his life with his new bride.

This story kept me chuckling throughout. Kay P. Dawson did a great job creating the storyline for Jessie and Cora and I’m glad to see a strong heroine who wasn’t afraid to back down. Grandma Mary sees Cora’s worth the minute she meets her and I think the reader will as well. The question is – does Jessie?

What an outstanding start to this series. We are in for a treat if the rest of the books in this series are as good as this one. First you should know all the books in this series are on sale for 99 cents until release day. This is the time to pick it up if you want to try a new author or get back in touch with a much loved author.

Jesse has a need for money he needs it fast before the lady he wants to marry up and marries someone else. He takes one last cattle drive to get enough money to buy land, build a home with a little left over to marry his dream women. Times are not easy when his cook up and dies in a gun fight leaving him with no one to cook for his men. Why he is off looking for a new cook one of his men has a plan on how to get a new cook and help the lady he just met who is trying to get to her sister. Jesse finds out you may plan all you want but sometimes life has its own plans. This is going to be one heck of a long drive with a woman who drives him crazy in more than one way.

To get away from a father who has her best interest at heart making her marry a man twice her age that she doesn’t like is bad enough. To become a mail ordered bride to fight for some freedom to get off the stage only to find the marry you are suppose to marry just died almost right before your eyes is just too much leaving you all alone in a new country where you know no one and have no money is mind blowing. What do you do when this happens to you dress as a boy sign up as a cook for a cattle drive that is going to end where your sister is. Cora finds life isn’t as easy as she thought it would be, this might just be more than she bargained for. What is up with Jesse is he always this hateful or does she just bring out the worse in him?

I loved the characters in this story, as well as the humor, anger and head butting when Jesse and Cora can’t get along it leads to some wonderful entertainment. I had to chuckle as Cora learns to cook on an open fire as well as make coffee. There are lovely games of pay back that will leave you with your hand over your mouth. Tempers raise high as these two go head to head both trying to prove their point. This is a delightful plot as you watch the attraction growing leaving both confused and uneasy. The cowboys are cute as they fill some time with humor keeping you smiling. This story brought back wonderful memories for me with the calves yelling for their mothers. I was raised on a farm seeing and helping out with the new babies was always a delight. The calves would suck on your finger thinking they would get milk always kept us entertained.

This story is very believable making you wonder how many women traveled so many miles to be a bride only to find out for one reason or another they are left alone penniless and no way to make a living. The supporting characters add so much to this story. I read it all in one setting I just could not put it down. Cora and Jesse are just great people who will have to make a few tough decisions. I enjoyed how this story came together with a wonderful buildup that is clean full of fun. I totally loved how the author brought in the theme for the wedding quilt. What a delightful lady Jesse’s grandmother is. You will find between these pages a little action and suspense that will make you hold your breath, clean passion that will make your heart skip a beat, fights, anger with tempers that fly, pay backs and wonderful delightful humor. If you are looking for a story that pulls you in and make you almost feel like you are part of the read this is the one. I can hardly wait for the rest of the books in this series.

I always enjoy Ms. Dawson’s stories and once again she has spun a beautiful tale that gives the reader a glimpse of the hardships of life for a woman. The story is sprinkled with some historical facts, recipes, and artistic liberties to take the reader on the journey from Texas to Kansas along with driving a herd of longhorn cattle and the job of the trail cook, better known as Cookie.

Cora followed in her older sister’s footsteps of leaving England and heading to America to avoid an unwanted and arrangement marriage by her father. From ship, to train, to stagecoach, only to arrive and find her intended groom deceased from a gunfight, as well as the cook for the chuckwagon to Kansas. But out of the ashes is born, Cookie, the newest to join the team. The travel will come with its dangers and trials of keeping Cora’s identity a secret, tolerating questionable food, dealing with weather, stampedes, river crossings, Indians, rustlers, and the various events along the trail.

Jesse Atwell sure didn’t plan to be caught without his cook, and now this new secret. He sure hopes Shorty knows what he is doing. Women had their place, and a single woman on the trail is just not it. The struggle of dealing with making the money he needs to buy land, so Harriet will finally agree to marry him weighs heavy on his mind. Now he must protect Cora aka Cookie and get her to her sister in Abilene so he can move on with his life.

The plot is a fascinating adventure with a delightful cast of characters. The story will keep the pages turning as all the mishaps and life in the wild west are brought out in this tale of moving cattle and taming the frontier. The recipes that follow at the end of the story add a beautiful touch. Grandma Mary is a wise woman, and I love how she gently shares her advice with those around her. ”Marriage is a serious commitment, and not one to be taken lightly. Love is meant to be forever, and it should be given freely, without conditions.” The quilt she makes for her first born grandson is called an Irish Chain. “That quilt is a symbol of love you will share with the woman you marry. You need to know that the woman who is under the quilt with you every night, is the woman you want to spend your days with for the rest of your life.”

Oh my, Jessie sure surprised me. It seems that Cora was more like Kizzie than Jessie thought. It amazes me how people think they know who they love and what about them they loved, but it all falls apart when they meet that one special person who changes everything.

I applaud Cora, her bravery to leave England all on her own, to join a cattle drive pretending to be a cook. She learned so much on that trip, including how to cook as well as falling in love.

Harriet reminded me of a gold digger, not really loving the man she was to marry but what she could get out of him. She is the type to stay clear of.

Beautiful Story, I love how grandma Mary seems to know what sort of woman or man her grandchildren were going to fall in love with and marry as she sewed the quilt for their wedding.
