Product Description

From Amazon

Jesus Freaks by dc Talk and The Voice of the Martyrs, is a companion volume to dc Talk's album of the same name. It is a book for teenagers about martyrdom, containing dozens of profiles of figures ranging from Stephen, whose martyrdom is described in the Book of Acts, to "Anila and Perveen," two teenage Pakistani girls and Christian believers. In 1997, Perveen was killed for running away in order to avoid marrying a Muslim man; Anila was imprisoned for helping her friend escape. In an introduction to the book, Michael Tait explains its purpose: "In a world built on free will instead of God's will, we must be the Freaks. While we may not be called to martyr our lives, we must martyr our way of life. We must put our selfish ways to death and march to a different beat. Then the world will see Jesus." The book's design is hip and easy to read, and its summary of Christian persecutions that continue today is useful--and frightening.

This amazing book is one of the most life considering books of all time. The whole book consists of true stories of people who died for what they believe. Sounds boring that that's all there is? On the contrary. If you read the just the first story, it is almost a guarantee your view on apologetics and Christianity in general will be changed. Atheists should take it as a challenge to see if they will not be changed. But I recommend it to all. There are many books on historical, physical, and philosophical evidence proving or disproving Christianity. But this book gives first hand spiritual truth. You don't see mass-martyrdom in any "religion" except Christianity. Many of these stories are accounts of people who actually took on impossible positions of survival, that to even the healthiest person alive could not withstand physically or mentally. Just for example a story of a Christian who was put out in the cold to double-digit, below zero temperature, every night, wearing his summer gear, because he didn't disclaim Jesus. Yet, if he made just that virtually effortless confession, he would be set free. No man would physically survive without the intervention of God. Even if they could, they wouldn't have the mental power to not say those few words to disclaim God- provided the pain they would be going through. There are many inspiring and down right out of this world stories that are sure to make you think twice about your whole life. I don't care what your intentions are or what "religion" you are or aren't- this book should be read by anyone who is able to obtain it.

What would you do for Christ? Is He your Lord and Savior? This incredible book talks about the trials some Christians will go through to prove their loyalty to Jesus Christ. I am amazed at the strength of conviction that some Christians hold and the extent to which they will suffer in mind and body before reaching their personal limit. To some this suffering results in martyrdom.
The compilation of stories are not just from a time when Jesus walked the earth and talked to people who would later become martyrs, but those people who have felt the power of Jesus today. Whether adult or child, there is one common thread in all of the stories within Jesus Freaks. This thread, as the name implies is Jesus Christ. The book will open your eyes to supernatural powers that will simply astound you.
This book shows the lives of Christians whose faith was strong enough to withstand the ultimate challenge. For non-Christians who would like examples of strength of conviction of some Christians, they need only look to the examples in this book. The format of the book is such that it is easy to read and allows for reading short sections at a time. I believe with all of my heart that this book tells it like it is and foreshadows of the things to come.

First off I should let it be known that unlike most of the other reviewers of this book, I am not a Christian, nor do I see myself becoming one any time soon. If it offends you that I don't follow Christianity as my religion or if you think it will be a determining factor in whether my review is satisfactory or not, skip my review and read everyone elses. This book was recommended to me only because of its nature and it being a "good read". I read it solely for the books historical content and the interest in the subject which it talks about.
Written by Christian rock group dc Talk and the foundation called The Voice Of The Martyrs, "Jesus Freaks" chonricles and puts into one volume stories and tales of Christian martyrs dating back to the time of Christ's life, telling the stories of how many of them lost their lives, dignity, and pride because of their religious faith. Numerous well-known events are told across the span of the book, such as the death of Stephen, the first recorded martyr of Christianity, as well as the beheading of the Apostle Paul after his capture by Roman soldiers.
However, the book does not stay only on the subject of those killed by the Romans almost 2000 years ago, and reminds the reader of the acts of persecution that have taken place most recently in the past century, citing such martyrs that were killed by the Nazi party in Germany during the 1940's, Russian soldiers executed by the Communists because of their faith, and entire churches massacred by the Korean government during the conflict between North and South Korea.
More disturbing are the cases which have taken place in the 1980's and 1990's, particularly due to the nature and methods in which the martyrs were tortured and sometimes killed.

D.C. Talk means well with their treatment of many martyrs that died for Christ. If the point was to inspire young adults and teens to be willing to sacrifice ALL for our Lord, this vehicle is a good one. The small things we may sacrifice in our time and place seem inconsequential compared to the sacrifices of these brothers and sisters in the Lord. I did not, however, give it 5 stars because of two issues... Another reviewer felt that most Catholics represented in the text are definitly presented as the "bad guys." I agree. They are repeatedly presented as being in error philisophically and behaviorally throughout the text. The reader should know that this is not an adaquate representation of true Catholicism, which has Jesus and His sacrifice at it's center, nor does it represent most true Catholics. I think personnal misgivings about this original part of the Church seeps into the text. Second, some of the information, particularly on the early saints, is incorrect. This book should be viewed as an inspirational work that glorifies the works and power of our Lord rather than a completely factual rendition of all events.
