Product Description

In a dreary small town in the north of France, the local teenagers go around in circles. Twenty-year-old Freddy (David Douche) might be called a skinhead, but that suggests some passion or political direction, and Freddy has none. A mean-faced, rudely simple young man, Freddy is aimless and indifferent, and his relationship with his girlfriend Marie (Marjorie Cottreel) seems to be entirely about mechanical sex. Things turn violent when an Arab boy flirts with Marie, and Freddy explodes in vengeance. Life of Jesus director Bruno Dumont means to disturb, and he succeeds almost too well; the misery of this world, rendered in detached glimpses, is relentlessly bleak. Clearly influenced by the great French director Robert Bresson, Dumont does have a purpose, and the enigmatic title hints at it: if we can find a divine spark in the brutish Freddy, then charity can exist anywhere. Among the startling elements in this film are a few moments of unfaked sexual explicitness, reportedly achieved by use of body doubles. But for sheer shock value, sexual frankness pales next to the vacant, voided lives laid bare in this grim picture; that's the real obscenity. --Robert Horton

I picked this up for about $10.00. Half of that would have been more of a proper price. The acting is lame at best.It was looks like it was video taped with a camcorder. The scenes were put together in a nonsensical manner.Example;side one has the crucifixion but side two has the last supper and the trial.Side one has the ascension, side two has an earlier encounter with the apostles after the resurrection. If they took the time to put this together as one full feature instead of two separate stories I might have given it 2 stars.Video tape editing here I come. This movie makes Jesus W/Brian Deacon really look like the masterpiece some people think that it is.But that movie sucks too. It's only half as bad as this one.If I had not already been a Christian this unbelievable portrayal would definately have sent me in the opposite direction.Let's face it people.Using the bible only as a shooting script has never worked and never will.MAYBE GOD DOESN'T APPROVE OF PLAGIARISM.

The movies are very well done! The dialog, if I'm not mistaken, is taken straight from God's Holy Word and nothing else. I've not been fond of any other movies done by the Crouches, but this was actually faithful to God's Word. What a miracle! This is why I give it 5 stars.
The DVD has a feature (NOT a part of the movie) that tells about the so-called "patron saints." It says that these "patron saints" are "over" certain areas of life, such as carpentry or health or whatever, and that these physically dead "patron saints" help us when we pray to them. This is NOT biblical. We are to pray to GOD and no one else. At least this is not part of the movie and you don't have to subject your kids to it.
The movie itself was great!

HASH(0xa511e7bc) out of 5 stars JESUS is # 1 June 20 2000

When thinking of Jesus's life and his sacrificing death for our sake. This movie has it all! It is a brilliant portrayel of Jesus as interpreted from the bible. From the begining to the very end.
If you enjoy watching movies about Jesus, his time on earth, and the lessons and love he shares with us. Give this movie a try! If more people understood and followed what Jesus taught (in this movie), there would be less hatred in this world.
Noone can compare to Jesus's life and work that he has done. And whether or not you believe in Jesus. It is awesome watching one figure live and die for the sins of the world.Completely blameless of any unrighteous act. This movie will definetely make you think!

HASH(0xa511ec24) out of 5 stars JUST ANOTHER ONE? June 7 2001
By A Customer - Published on
Format: DVD
It is a good film and doesn't make too many biblical mistakes, but it just doesn't have the top notch actors it takes to tell a story of the life of Jesus. It is a tough job that countless filmmakers have been trying to perfect for years. I have a pretty good collection of biblical type videos and DVDs, so this just adds to the group. My favorite is still Franco Zefferelli's TV mini-series one, which is on three videos.

HASH(0xa511eba0) out of 5 stars Praise Jesus! March 20 2008

I've been one of a select few of Bruno Dumont lovers after the delirious "Twentynine Palms" but "Life Of Jesus" is a more subdued, more restrained but no less disturbing piece of work.
This film never starts sermonising or getting didactic, instead it allows the audience to draw its own conclusions without the usual sensationalism you'd expect from a film that deals with bigotry and intolerance in a small provincial community.

HASH(0xa511e9b4) out of 5 stars A great story with a real plot June 16 2014

It's so nice to see a film that can show honest real love making( showing both sexes in the nude with realism) with teenagers with a plot for we all know we have been there and done that! I love the male actor who can show his excitement and realism to love making. We know that teenagers do this so why not show it as it is? This film shows the difficulty of classes with a bit of racism the true portrayal of the human heart. Very well acted and a good film that I will watch over and over again. Victor
