On Bleed American, emo-rock band Jimmy Eat World exemplify all that is the modern radio rock sound. Singing and playing with a conviction and sincerity that will melt the heart of even the most stoic of listeners, they produce rousing, well-crafted anthems along the lines of Third Eye Blind at their roughest or a more polished Green Day. These guys appear to be able to write ready-made singles at the drop of a hat, as evidenced by "Your House" as well as the title track. In fact, there is a rather shocking maturity to their material that belies the band members' ages (all in their 20s). While they sometimes veer into cringe-worthy power-ballad territory, overall Jimmy Eat World give the people what they want with Bleed American. --Ike Bolton

The album opens with the blistering guitar assault of 'Salt Sweat Sugar' (formerly 'Bleed American'), an astonishing combination of volcanic riffage, perfect melody and angry lyrics (the song details the struggle of coal miners). 'A Praise Chorus', which follows, is 'classic' Jimmy Eat World - a furiously energetic opening, with the song gradually building up to a wonderful, emotional and blurred final coda ('I wanna always feel like part of this was mine/I wanna fall in love tonight'). It's pulsating, thrilling, moving - everything a song should be. Exhiliarating single 'Sweetness' is also all of the above, and like almost every song on the album is crushingly, bruisingly emotional ('Stumble till you crawl/Sinking into sweet uncertainty').
The pure poppy perfection of 'The Middle' enhances and exacerbates the terribly important message of the song (the song is a sympathetic and incredibly uplifting message to the millions of people struggling to comprehend the cruelty of people and the world - 'Just be yourself/It doesn't matter if that's good enough for someone else/It just takes some time/Little girl you're in the middle of the ride/Everything, everything will be just fine'). 'Your House' is a tender, unashamedly romantic and effortlessly catchy acoustic track, again building up to a very moving climax.
The album's two most outstanding songs are tracks six and seven, 'Hear You Me' and 'If You Don't, Don't'.Read more ›
There is something for everyone here: "The Middle," "A Praise Chorus" and "Sweetness" for pop-philes, "If You Don't, Don't" and "Your House" for the brokenhearted, "Bleed American," "The Authority Song" and "Get It Faster" for fans of the louder rock, and "Cautioners," "My Sundown" and "Hear You Me" for lonely souls. In a matter of eleven tracks, the album moves subtly from poetic to optimistic, edgy to mysterious, haunting to catchy.
My personal favorite tracks are "The Middle," "Hear You Me" and "Cautioners." If "The Middle" had come out 15 years ago, it would have been on the soundtrack to a John Hughes flick. "Hear You Me" breaks your heart and heals it all at once, and anyone who has ever lost someone can relate to it. "Cautioners" grabs you and never lets go.
I am quite impressed by the lyrics on each and every track. In this day and age when many releases are rife with cursing and upsetting subject matter, or are too bland or formulaic to tell apart, it is nice to hear an album that pushes you forward and lifts you up.
I strongly recommend this album, especially to folks who like Dexter Freebish, Phantom Planet or other bands in that vein. With the variety of styles and stories told on "Bleed American," these young fellows prove that they are going to make their mark on the World.
1. Bleed American: This song is pretty good not my favorite, mostly yelling. 7/10
2. A Praise Chorus: This is my FAVORITE song on the album! It combines an awesome bridge with a TIGHT chorus!!! It is just SO good! Beats The Middle by LONG! 10/10
3. The Middle: This song is good its not as good as some as the others though. Still a wonderful song, with great vocals! 8/10
4. Your House: Dont care SO much for this song. However it does have good, challenging vocals. 7/10
5. Sweetness: What can I say this song is just SWEET!!! It is just So awesome if you're bored just flip in this CD and I guarantee you you'll be singing and danceing along by the end! Very fun and Punkish, was my favorite song til' I really listened hard to a Praise Chorus. 10/10
6. Hear you me: The BEST slow song on the album great vocals, great music, just a great melody! 9/10
7. If you Dont, Dont: Doesnt really make sense but still a GREAT song and pretty catchy. Good harmony. 8/10
8. Get it faster: Not really my style uhh not so great I would rather it not be on the album. Its a good song, but its drowned out by the other GREAT songs. 6/10
9.Cautioners: This is a good song not quite as good as Hear you Me but still good and catchy, definetly a good chorus. 8/10
10. Authority Song: Do NOT listen to ppl who say this song is annoying, it is SO good! And it livens up the end of the CD, cuz most of the songs towards the end are slow.Read more ›
