Product Description

From the Inside Flap

'NO' is RJ's least favorite word . . . and he tries his best to convince his dad, his mom, and his teacher to turn "No" into "Maybe" or "We'll see" or "Later" or "I'll think about it." Even though he doesn't have much success, RJ keeps arguing until his teacher suggests that he try to join her classroom's Say YES to NO Club. If RJ can learn how to accept "No" for an answer and to disagree appropriately with his teacher and parents, he can add his name to the club's Star Board. RJ finds that lots of praise and some rewards come his way when he uses these skills the right way!

Author Julia Cook helps K-6 readers laugh and learn along with RJ as he understands the benefits of demonstrating these social skills both at home and in school. Tips for parents and educators on how to teach and encourage kids to use the skills of accepting "No" for an answer and disagreeing appropriately are included in the book.

I Just Don't Like the Sound of NO! is another title in the BEST ME I Can Be! series of books from the Boys Town Press to teach children social skills that can make home life happier and school more successful.

Winner of the 2011 MOM's Choice Awards Honoring Excelence. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

About the Author

With over a million books in print, Julia Cook, a former school counsellor, never dreamed she could evolve into an award-winning children's book author. Several years ago, Julia was searching for an effective story to teach children the difference between tattling and telling. When she couldn't find the right resource, she decided to write her own book, Tattle Tongue. Fast forward several years and she has more than 50 published books and activity guides. Julia takes top research and creativity and translates it into "kid language" that is both entertaining and engaging. Her light, humourous approach keeps kids laughing while they're learning good behaviour skills. The goal behind all of Julia's books and efforts is to actively involve people into her fun and creative stories and teach them to become life-long problem solvers.

This book was helpful in reading to my own child about the topic of understanding the word NO! she was interested in the pictures and has picked it out to read before bed a few times. It is a bit wordy and would be more suitable for kids in the age of SK-grade 2 range.

Arrived today and just read to my 3 kids. They are ok with it but I feel so sorry for the boy in this book. I mean being a kid is hard, and the parents and the teacher don't even care to give a nice word when they refuse him. They just want things done the "right" way, and they want him to behave the way he "should be", but nobody seems care about he has feelings! Just think about it, people keep saying no to whatever you want and you have to say "ok" every single time, can you really do it? For a sticker on the wall? At least tell the kids that I can't give you what you ask for but it's not your fault that there's something you really want, not a harsh "no means no".

I used this book to help some of grade 2 students deal with hearing the word "no". Some of my students were having major fits when they weren't getting what they wanted so this book is a great way to talk about this issue.

My toddler loves this book and we often refer to it when she's about to tantrum and it's definitely helped to prevent a few.
