This book blew me away with the content of it - it's heavy and needs to be addressed in a serious way.

Alexa Kennedy is a 4th year medical student at the top of her class, fighting for the top position against Rhonda. Rhonda is a girl who will do anything to get it, anything. When Alexa is in a car accident in her dad's car on her way to the hospital her world is turned upside down. Plus when her dad learns about the accident what will he do? There is so much pressure on Alexa to be the best.

Dex Blakewell has taken his car out for the night when he is involved in a car accident with Alexa and although he initially thinks she has given him false information he finds himself completely taken with her.

But, Alexa is keeping big secrets from Dex and as the two get closer he begins to discover some of what she has been hiding from him. When Alexa reaches her breaking point will she be able to rely on those closest to her?

Like I said - this book is deep but so encouraging!! I just kept reading and was blown away at well the topics are covered and was so surprised at the end by several revelations. I hope anyone who has any issues with mental help get the help that is out there and comes out on top!

This is well written and goes into a lot of detail. The way Dex's and Alexa's relationship forms is so real like. They fall in love and it's inspiring to read you can totally picture the way he looks at her while your reading. Even after he finds out about her mental illness a lot of people would walk away and not look back, only did he not do that you stood by her even when she didn't want him to, it's amazing what a love of man or women can do to someone who suffers from mental illness. And it's amazing that Stats was able to turn her life around and make something of herself and to help others. We need a lot more people like Alexa in the real world to do the things out here what she done in this book to help people. It's well worth read and well written as well would recommend to anyone.

HASH(0x9c18b624) out of 5 stars 4 tough stars Nov. 13 2015

Overall Opinion: This is a hard book to review. I felt like it was well written, and it addresses the big issue of people with mental illnesses being stigmatized. Did I like the characters? Yes. Did I feel like I was rooting for their relationship to succeed? Yes. Is this a book that I'll read again? No. I also don't think this would be the book for everyone. Don't get me wrong -- there are some light moments that made me smile and swoon at times, so it's not All sad...but it is covering some tough subjects. The times that the h and H interacted, and just their overall relationship (best friends first before lovers type that can spend every waking minute together and enjoy it) dynamic is what made it a 4 star rating for me.

Brief Storyline: This is Alexa and Dex's story. They meet when Alexa crashes her Dad's car into Dex. After Dex tracks her down to get her information, they end up building a fast friendship. They spend more and more time together whenever they can, and end up changing their relationship and falling in love. Alexa is struggling with medical school among other things (check my goodreads review for a spoiler), and is keeping some big secrets from Dex. They have some hard times, but do get their HEA.

POV: This alternated between Alexa and Dex's POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Good. It was heavy so I personally slowed down a little, but I wouldn't say the the writing caused that -- it flowed well.

Instalove: No

H rating: 4.5 stars. Dex. Almost perfect. He only had a few moments that I wanted to shake him, but he more than made up for them and acknowledged his own mistakes (which is sometimes rare with our alphas). I loved how devoted he was to Alexa, and how he changed throughout the book because he had found his other half.

h rating: 4 stars. Alexa. Poor Alexa. She sure had a hard upbringing. She had some really crappy parents that ended up doing more harm than good with her. She has struggled through her life, but we get some hope for her with the end and the epilogue.

Sadness level: Moderate/high. I cried some with this book. It does cover some hard issues that make it emotional.

Heat level: The couple have great chemist and have some steamy times.

Descriptive sex: Yes

Closure: Thank goodness for the light and happy epilogue! It gave us some good closure and the couple got their well deserved HEA.

Worth the $?: I paid $3.99 on Amazon, and I'd say it was worth it.

HASH(0x9c055e88) out of 5 stars Moving! Heart Stopping! Steamy! Oct. 22 2015

What a combination! From the minute I started reading this book it seemed as if I was constantly laughing. I would find myself smiling while reading this book. I love the way the author uses words to paint the picture of the emotions between the characters. Even if the words to describe the emotions are not typically used where I am from, I knew exactly what she meant and I loved it. This book was well written, and flowed seamlessly. There was never a point where I said to myself “who is this?”, “what time is it in the story?”, or “what just happened”. Everything fit exactly where it was supposed to be.
The author described the characters very well. I have an image painted in my head of all of the characters, and I loved the tricky foreshadowing that the author used. You just think you know where the story’s going and then “Nah, it’s something else” happens. I cannot count how many times I was wrong about what was going on in Alexa’s past, or about the “who did what” mystery towards the end of the book.

I love the extreme detail that the author puts into the book describing medical school, the competition between the students, and the environment in the hospital where the students worked. The description of their workplace made me feel like I worked there. The writing made me feel as if I was Alexa. I could experience the same feelings that she was. When the story shifts to Dex I can feel his pain and emotions as well. This author is a true master of painting with words.

When I finished the book I felt like Alexa and Dex were my best friends. This book was so heartfelt and I can relate as I assume many women will be able to. The feelings that Alexa had is something that most women know well. Feelings of being ugly, fat, worthless. These are all signs of a mental illness, but self-esteem issues can also be the case. Alexa definitely had low self-esteem and self-efficacy. I just wanted to climb into the book and help Alexa. Tell her that she was wrong. All of these things she was thinking were not true. Alexa needed a friend badly!
Alexa grew up in a home with a strict father and a compliant mother. She had suffered from mental illness since childhood and had not really received any professional help for her issues. Her father thought that he could “fix” her with discipline. This obviously spiraled out of control over the years and Alexa was not “fixed”. Alexa hid her problems well, trying to be the best she could be to please her father. Because she thought that if she didn’t then she was worthless.

She wouldn’t let her friends and co-workers get too close. She hid behind baggy clothes because she had problems with her self-image. She met a guy during a strange accident that she could not remember correctly, and they began a friendship. Neither of them were interested in dating when they had met, but things changed as time went on. They developed feelings for each other, then Alexa’s life started to unravel. I love how she talks about the tapestry of her life. I have heard this before and in Alexa’s case it fit perfectly. Alexa had a near death experience, but her best friend had saved her. They couldn’t live without each other. He had been there for her through everything and he never stopped. This book depicted true love at its finest, and how hard it is to love someone with a mental illness. How stressful it was for both parties. On a less serious note, I would like to say that the steamy sex scenes in this book were amazing. I was cheering for Alexa every time! She needed it, since she kept doubting how he felt about her body, or her because of her body. The sultry side of the book only added to the realism and helped portray the strong feelings that Alexa and Dex had for each other. How they made each other feel. This book definitely made me feel alive with the amount of emotion in it. You have to feel something when reading this, unless you do not have a pulse, in which case you are not reading.
I am so happy with the books ending. Justice was served, at least I hope it was.

Mental illness is not something to be brushed off. So many people believe that mental illness doesn’t exist. I wish those people could live five minutes in my shoes. My son has Aspergers, which is a form of Autism. Not only does he have Aspergers, but he also has psychotic disorder, general depression, and mood disorder. All of these things mixed together creates a jumbled mess of emotions, attitudes, and even personalities it seems. On a base scale, he is simply behind in social learning more than other children his age. He also has trouble focusing on one task especially if it doesn’t interest him. He has no interest in leaving the house most of the time. He’s afraid of rain, lighting, wind, and camera flashes. I cannot take him to any restaurant that may be having a birthday party. The last time this happened he stayed under the booth table the entire time. He’s 10 now, coping somewhat better with all of his mixed issues, but he hasn’t been to therapy in a while. There aren’t many in this area so we are waiting on a new one. My point is that raising a child with a mental illness is stressful. Sometimes I wanted to give up, but I didn’t. Mental illness runs in my family, and in my son’s fathers’ family. I could only imagine an adult trying to deal with these issues when they had never had any professional health. Mental illness is not something to poke fun at. It is widely misunderstood and the cause of most are truly unknown. In its own way, this book will help raise awareness about mental illness. Before reading this book I knew very little about Bulimia, and I definitely didn’t know the toll it could take on someone’s body.

This book needs a standing ovation, plain and simple.

I love the Jake Madison foundation. This event had me tearing up!

When the book ended I felt like my friends had moved away. Their story is pretty much concluded, but I would love to read another! I absolutely loved this book!

HASH(0x9bb9c984) out of 5 stars Excellent Dark Read Nov. 28 2015

***Cassandra Delorie #NerdGirlLola’s Review***

Disclaimer: This book deals with a multitude of different subjects from mental illness all the way to adoption. Please read with caution.

Now before I start just let me say that neither myself nor anyone close to me has gone through anything like what is portrayed in this book. The happenings in this book are real life issues that some people deal with on a daily basis. That being said here’s my review.

I am wrecked, totally and completely wrecked. I LOVE a book that can give me a good ugly cry and this one definitely made me do just that. From page one all the way to end I had a tear in my eye the whole time.

This book is eloquently written; it takes very difficult topics and gives the reader an insider’s view into the mind of Alexa, the person living with the demons, and Dex, the person watching from the outside. Both perspectives are insightful and devastating at the same time. As messed up as this may sound, I loved all the details the author wrote in to the story. It gave me a better idea of what Alexa was going through.

Though this book may not be for everyone I urge people to read it. If only to help the author with her goal of helping take the stigma away from mental illness and getting awareness for the issues covered in the book.

Overall this is an excellent read. I love this book simply because of how detailed it is and because I grew to love Alexa and Dex. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone over the age of 18.

HASH(0x9bb706cc) out of 5 stars Romance with grit Dec 23 2015
By Twisted Book Curmudgeon - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Heartwarming with serious topics and a great style of writing.

Alexa Kennedy is at the top of her medical class. She is smart, beautiful, and kind person. Underneath the surface, however, lies darkness. Body issues, self-loathing, she is bulimic, which stem from her father's ideas of perfection.

Rushing one night to the hospital to say goodbye to a patient, she crashes into Dex.

Dex: a successful business man who runs his own company, is commitment shy. The night Alexa crashes into his life, things begin to change.

Both have issues, big ones. What starts as friendship turns into something more.

I really enjoyed this. It's romance with grit.

I wanted to love this book. I appreciate the author talking about this kind of subject matter - emotional and mental health needs to be talked about. But I felt like there was too much superfluous information, a lot of telling, and not enough showing the depth of Alexa's real issues or where some of them stemmed from. On a separate note, I an so completely sick to death of the beautiful/catty girl = enemy trope being used just to add drama. I really needed to see more effort to make at least one of the girls in this book to not be totally useless for Alexa. Dex was kind of all over the place - I had a really difficult time getting a feel for his personality. But I'm not giving up on this subject matter - I need more of it but it needs to be done well.
