This is the second book I have read by this author. He really knows his stuff and how to tell the story. This one is about poor immature and very young Ashley who meets this manipulative, violent, crazy man who directs her to kill for him. She is completely under his spell and does what he tells her to do. The more you get into the book the more you hate this guy. He is now where he belongs but still tries to manipulate people and thinks he will eventually be believed and get away. I feel very sorry for Ashley who is now spending her best years in prison but take comfort in the fact that the true killer and mastermind is now rotting in prison and hopefully one day will burn in hell.

This was a very well fleshed-out story; my only regret is I truly would have liked to see pictures of the courageous young woman who was so widely liked and respected, and who sadly died at the hands of another WOMAN, in an effort to protect other women from future predations of an evil man who had terrorised and so injured her.
As I closed the pages on this sad report, I wanted to have firm in my mind the picture of the actual heroine of the piece, who has a right to be remembered as a martyr for truth and justice.

HASH(0xa3377d38) out of 5 stars Not the author's best endeavor - TEDIOUS! Dec 24 2011

This book is definitely not the author's best endeavor. There is too much irrelevant details about the investigators and not any background on the victim or the accused. The short, sarcastic comments from the author could be left out also. Seems to me that the book was padded with a lot of uninteresting information and the author's unnecessary remarks. Even most of the pics were dull! This is not the first book I've read from this author that was not particularly well researched and had way too much personal commentary from the author. His other book, Love Her to Death, had the same silly remarks from the author. Many time the remarks are made into one sentence paragraphs. I personally found the remarks very irritating. The author can't even get his descriptions correct. When first introducing Ashley he describes her as having big blue gorgeous eyes. Then later in the book she is described as having green eyes. What??? I didn't finish the book. I'd seen the 48 hours program and that was enough. This book is TEDIOUS.

HASH(0xa3377f84) out of 5 stars A Little Lacking, But Still A Must Read Nov. 27 2010
By Kim Bryan - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback
Sandee Rozzo had spent two days being held hostage, beaten, and brutally raped.

And she knew the name of the man who had subjected her to the most horrifying experience of her life: Timothy "Tracey" Humphrey.

After all, they had (somewhat) dated in the past; at the very least, very close friends with benefits - even if it was done with reluctance on Sandee's part.

Sandee had filed criminal charges against Tracey and was only weeks away from having her day in Court. It had seemed to take forever to reach this point; what with Tracey's threats to do whatever it took to stay out of prison.

When Sandee was murdered in the 11th hour of July 5, 2002, friends, family, and even mere acquaintances pointed the finger at Humphrey.

As police begin to dig into Humphrey's history, they would learn about a man hell bent of things being done his way an no qualms about using violence and intimidation to get it.

In his newest book, Kill For MeVeteran true crime author M. William Phelps chronicles the story of Tracey Humphrey and how he convinced his young wife, Ashley, to kill a woman who could have possibly sent him to prison. Ashley, in turn, does the ad nauseum bit of "if it wasn't for him, I never would have done it." (Personal note here: how the hell does she know? Apparently she had it in her to do it. What's to same somebody might have pushed her buttons someday enough to do it without encouragement?)

It's an titillating story, filled with a sex, jealousy, revenge, and murder. Unfortunately, it's the first Phelps' book I've finished feeling a void.

There was too many unanswered questions.

For example, we're given only a (very) brief history on Sandee; not the typical, in-depth childhood to adulthood summaries we've come to love from Phelps. As a matter of fact, when it was all said and done, I never developed much of a bond (for lack of a better word) with Sandee and felt the sympathy you feel for most victims. (And I do not like that feeling!)

Again, the history of Tracey and Ashley is limited; the latter being the bettered detailed, even more so than Sandee's. However, I have give Phelps' a break on this as he explains why this is lacking in the epilogue.

Now that aside -

While Phelps doesn't give us what we've come to expect to him in terms of the nitty-gritty on everybody.

But one thing I do love - and that we've seen in several of Phelps' books - is the relating of letters between he and the killers, which most times shows them for the narcissistic, control-freaks they are. Needless to say, Phelps (nor Humphrey) did not fail readers here.

Irregardless of the fact I don't think this is the best of Phelps' books Kill For Me will still be in the top listing of 2010 true crime books so you don't want to miss it.

I read so many true crime books, that I am reluctant to write reviews anymore. I'm just tired of taking the time to do it. But I felt the need here. This book is amazing! So well written, investigated, and followed up upon. And, so tragic! It actually warms the soul to know that this sick ----, is locked up forever. Since he has ruined (if not taken) the life of every person he has ever come in contact with. I truly hope when the day comes, he enjoys his eternity in Hell!!!! Couldn't put this book down! A must read, in my opinion!!!!

HASH(0xa337d384) out of 5 stars Kudos, Mr. P! Feb. 21 2012

Besides some minor repetition, the author tells the story very well.

I do think his bias & disdain shows a bit much in his commentary, but it's difficult to refrain when writing about a guy like this.

I think more could have been done to help the readers get to know the victim. I like a book that makes me feel the loss as much as the victims friends do. However, I DID feel the fear the monster instilled in his wife.

Overall, I finished in one day, while sick in bed, which tells you it didn't put me to sleep.

Wow, what a great book! Mr. Phelps does another outstanding job researching and presenting this story of a real creep who manipulated everyone he came in contact with. I do not understand how a woman as pretty as Sandee Rozzo got involved in somebody as creepy as Tracey. This was a real page turner and I had a hard time putting it down. I highly recommend this book to all TC fans.
