Things are going great for Lexy Baker. She's finally opened her dream bakery, gotten rid of her cheating boyfriend and settled into her grandmothers house with her perky dog Sprinkles at her side.

But her blissful life doesn't last long. When her ex boyfriend is found poisoned with cupcakes from her bakery, Lexy finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation headed up by her hunky neighbor detective Jack Perillo.

With the help of a gang of iPad toting, would-be detective grandmothers, Lexy decides to take it upon herself to find the real murderer in order to clear her name and get her bakery back in business.

As things heat up on the murder trail, in the kitchen and between Lexy and the hunky detective, it's a race against time to put the real murderer behind bars and get back to baking.

Will Lexy get her man?

(This is book 1 in the Lexy Baker Culinary Cozy Mystery Series with Recipes, but you don't have to read them in order if you don't want too!)

I enjoyed the story despite a couple of plot weaknesses. The characters were well portrayed and believable. The role of the seniors was too small and seemed incidental to the story. When I got this book it was free.

I may try another by this author, but I sense a pattern. In any event this was a light hearted romance mystery, good for before sleep, or on the dock or beach. It won't have you on the edge of your seat but like a cupcake it was small, sweet and filled a craving.

As owner of a bakery, the aptly named Lexy Baker loves going to work every day. But when handsome detective Jack Perillo arrives to tell Lexy that her ex-boyfriend Kevin has been poisoned by Lexy’s cupcake tops, she’s forced to close shop while the cops analyze every ingredient. Lexy’s in shock. She hasn’t seen or heard from Kevin in nearly two years. Desperate to get back to work, she enlists the help of her coworker Cassie and her grandmother Nans, who enjoys amateur sleuthing with her friends at the retirement home.

Killer Cupcakes starts well. There’s enough detail and interest to tell us something about Lexy and her life, but once the investigation begins the details fade. The few suspects aren’t fleshed out well enough to give the readers much opportunity to guess who committed the crime, which is a large part of the enjoyment of cozy mysteries. One of the prime suspects, a woman Kevin was dating, has only one scene in the book and isn’t mentioned much after that. On the upside, a strong attraction between Lexy and Jack holds great promise for future installments.

At 146 pages, the story qualifies as a full-length novel, but the lack of suspects and subplots makes it feel more like a novella. There’s a rushed feeling to the story. The word choices and Lexy’s point of view are written at a simplistic level which would suit younger readers or adults learning to read. The largest problem for me, though was that the confrontation between Lexy and the killer only happens because of incredibly stupid actions on Lexy’s part. The excuse for her reluctance to call the cops for help just doesn’t work.

It started out well but the killer was the obvious choice near the beginning when there were no other suspects to really consider! I like the characters, though and will read another book by this author.

This is a cute cozy with likeable characters. It is a fun, light read. However, the grammatical errors throughout the book drove me up the wall. Oddly enough, there is a comment at the end of the story stating that the book had been reviewed several times to weed out these errors. I can't see how that was possible. The subsequent books in the series are also full of errors which makes reading them irritating after awhile, which is unfortunate as they are fairly enjoyable otherwise.
