Toni Anderson has created another great story featuring protection of an endangered species, international espionage, exceptional bravery, colossal inhumanity, bumbling bureaucracy and sizzling romance. This time, the setting of her story takes place in the mountainous region of north-eastern Afghanistan during the later stages of NATO occupation. There are flash backs to the brutal Russian occupation of Afghanistan and to the terrorist attacks in Northern Ireland during the 1970s and early 80s. The flash backs serve mainly for character development. I continue to put this author at the top of my list for contemporary romantic fiction.

I thought that there would be more about the snow leopards, more about the care of them, and more about their traits, way of life, etc. I also thought that I would learn more about Afghanistan and the cultures of the people. Overall, I just found it rather hard to keep track of the many characters that appeared in the story and none of them were really well developed.

This is a complex mix of nations, betrayal, treason, romance, secrets, lies, deceit and love.
The storyline spans across several decades but starts in the present day with a Russian defector and killing endangered snow leopards in the far northeast of Afghanistan.
Dr. Axelle Dehn is a strong, independent woman and a wildlife biologist. She races against time to save her precious cats from a poacher.
Special Air Force trooper, Tyrone Dempsey, and team are sent to capture a notorious terrorist believed to be dead.
The story is cleverly woven with tidbits of information of happenings of earlier years and the struggle of today. Everything isn't as cut and dried as first appeared and the secrets and deceit run deep.
The main H/h characters are great. There's none of this fake, unbelievable insta-love stuff but a gradual process of trust, confidence and friendship which leads to more.
On the whole it was a very well written, knowledgeable, action packed, malicious yet warming book with lots of twists and turns. I'm hovering between 3.5 and 4* because nearing the end I felt it was a little rushed but would recommend.

Having read Toni Anderson's previous books I was surprised she had to self publish this one, her best to date. The relationship between hero, Ty Dempsey and heroine, Axelle Dhen, developed on an emotional level first before being drawn into the physicality of love. Given the nature and locality of their meeting Toni, delicately but speedily, moved their relationship at an appropriate pace. This story is a complex one, drawing elements from two long running conflicts, the war in Afghanistan and the Irish "Troubles". What particularly spoke to me in this book were the insights into the previous experiences of both our hero, Ty, and our anti-hero, Dmitri Volkov, which elicited sympathy within me for both men and the life altering decisions they had to make. I grew up in the Irish Republic when the Troubles were at their height and vividly remember the horrors of our history. There are twists in this story but I won't spoil it for you. Read it!
